Get Arduino IDE v1.8.1 by following this blog https://blog.arduino.cc/2016/05/17/disc ... arm-linux/

Are you sure it's connected? Can your WiFi AP/Router see the MAC/IPv4 addresses for both the Arduino and the Raspberry?

sudo nmap -v -sn 192.168.1.0/24 is a good way to scan things from your Raspberry.

Is there a reason why the standard Arduino IDE that comes on the raspi desktop is v2.x and not the 1.8.x version with the board manager?? The v2.x IDE seems more limited.

You can download almost any version of the IDE from the Arduino site. I just downloaded IDE v1.6.9. Go to the Arduino site.
http://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software
If v1.8.2 is not what you want, select "Arduino 1.5.x Beta version" under "Previous Releases". Download the Linux ARM version and unpack. Navigate to the directory and run arduino

thanks for the response .. I was referring to when I do apt-get install arduino it installs 2.1.05? which does not
have the board manager ... I did not see this version on the arduino site ... so I was inquiring about the reason for
this version vs. the standard ones I see on the site.. i.e. 1.6x and 1.8x ...

That is not unique to RPi. I get an old version if I use the repository on Ubuntu, so I don't use apt-get there either.

I have multiple versions of the Arduino IDE on my Ubuntu box. I haven't been using the RPi to program Arduinos long enough to get more than one IDE version. I have 12 IDE versions on my Ubuntu box, going back to v1.0.5.

Have you tried v1.8.2 from the Arduino site? It is their latest release.

edit: I don't know where the RPi repository got a v2.x IDE.

yes I have tried the 1.8.2 version ... it is great! no problem .. I was able to program my ESP8266 without problems once I figured out about the gpio pins. I was not able to use the install script that came with it .. so I just go into the directory and run arduino like you mentioned ...

You can put an icon on your desktop. Easy with Pixel.

Select "File Manager", navigate to your folder, highlight arduino, then Edit->Create Link. Put it on your desktop. I rename my link to the version so I can have all versions available. I rename arduino to arduino-1.8.2 on my desktop with the File Manager.

A fairly painless way to install 1.8.2 would be:

Code: Select all

mkdir -p ~/Applications
cd ~/Applications
wget https://downloads.arduino.cc/arduino-1.8.2-linuxarm.tar.xz
tar xvJf arduino-1.8.2-linuxarm.tar.xz
cd arduino-1.8.2/
./install.sh
rm ../arduino-1.8.2-linuxarm.tar.xz
This adds Arduino to the desktop menu.

The Raspbian Arduino version is 1.0.5. I think the ‘2’ comes from the apt-cache output ‘Candidate: 2:1.0.5+dfsg2-4’

I'm just setting up an Arduino Uno Wifi today for the ill-advised net-connected cowbell I came up with. I'll let you know how it goes. It's just an ESP8266 handling serial comms to a standard Uno, so it shouldn't be too weird, right?

If you use install.sh, it deletes any previous versions from your desktop. I like having previous versions available. I do a lot of troubleshooting on the Arduino forum, and sometimes the problem is version specific.

It only deletes menu icons. The old package is still there if you want it.
