Why is no XBMC distro working?

Sun Oct 05, 2014 4:44 pm

Hi guys. I'm not new here, but i lost old account "onkzzz".
I'm 14 now btw! Anyway:

I have 2 Pi's.
I have downloaded:
1: OpenELEC
2: DarkELEC
3: Raspbmc
4: XBian

I have used 2 SD Cards, 2 different power supplies, and both ethernet and WiFi.
But NONE of these distros seem to work for me!
ITS ANNOYING!
OpenELEC restarts about 5 seconds past the main menu of XBMC
DarkELEC fails to boot
Raspbmc gets stuck at boot with the "R" Logo
XBian works perfect but breaks as soon as i turn the pi off.

I have used OpenELEC 4 for about 7 months straight for our main media center, no issues.
Now both my Pi's are having issues using ANY of these distros.
Someone please help!
Cheers

You quite likely have insufficient power. You need a power supply that can maintain a regulated 5V and supply at least 2 amps [2000ma]. You cannot guarantee you are providing adequate power without actually measuring the voltage [at TP1 & TP2] on the pi. There are a lot of substandard phone charger power supplies out there.

2mA is much more than you need. I run XBMC on a Pi with a wireless dongle on a 1A supply.

But it must be a GOOD 1A.

I was getting instability and rather than buying a multimeter to check the levels is was cheaper to to buy a new power supply. I got one from modmypi. Rock solid ever since..

Sadly you can't just rely on the PSU label to tell you this. A Pi [without high consumption USB devices] will happily run on 1A, but the bottom line is PSU must be able to maintain a regulated 5V with the load you're giving it [and the load changes depending on what the Pi is doing].

If it's working unreliably, you can either swap PSU's randomly until it works, or measure the voltage & know you either have power problems, or to look for something else.
