Media centre using HDMI and TOSLINK

Mon Aug 12, 2013 10:18 pm

Hi everyone,

I am strongly considering buying a Pi for use as my media centre with XBMC, as I just finally cut the cord with my cable provider.

My question is a "should this set up work" kind of thing.

I have an LG 42pb4dt TV (Plasma), and a Pioneer receiver that does not have HDMI. My question is whether or not people think the Pi will work with HDMI to the TV, and TOSLINK from the "DIGITAL AUDIO OUT" port on the TV to the Pioneer receiver.

I know it will likely be try it and find out, but just wondering if anyone has had success trying it this way.

My other option ($$) is to buy this, which I've seen posted on numerous forums:

Thanks for your time!

The TOSLINK out on the TV is intended to work the way you want. So it should work. But not my fault if it doesn't. :)

Appreciate the response.

If it doesn't work, I'm blaming you personally!

I kid, I kid.

Have yet to buy the Pi, but when I do, I'll be sure to report back on whether it worked or not.

My TV (Samsung LE40C580 LCD) does exactly the same thing: HDMI input for audio, TOSLINK output for audio (which I had hooked up to a 2-channel amplifier, until it died a horrible screaming death).

As drgeoff says, it should work exactly as you need it to.

I use my PI as my media server running raspBMC on the TV in our bedroom pulling from our NAS. I run the PI via HDMI to our LG 37CS560 then sound out to an LG NB3520A Soundbar/Subwoofer combo via toslink and it works perfectly.

It's not the same model or exact same set up but I see no reason why it wouldn't function the same way.

You might find it works 100%, or works with stereo but is silent with DTS, or that it downmixes 5.1 to stereo. Depends on the tv.
