If you're new to any kind of programming then python's not a bad place to start. Try to put any ideas about what you would like to do with it out of your mind until you have grasped at least the basics of coding (the words 'real-time data' open a whole can of worms). My son worked his way through http://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/ in a week or so and seemed to reach a level that had taken me many years!
