Email notifier/ CPU usage LEDs

Mon Aug 06, 2012 8:00 am

Hey guys,

How would I go about programming an LED to flash when a new email arrives? Or have 3 status LEDs that would each turn on depending on CPU usage? No idea how to get a program to search for things 'internally'! :) :) :)

Thanks

I don't have a specific "how to do it" answer, but general information.

First you would need to make a small boards with LEDs connected to the GPIO pins, since you can't really use the on-board LEDs for your own purposes. Then you would write a program that checks various pieces of system information or files and updates the GPIO pins. Then it would go to sleep for a little while and loop back to the top.

If needed, I made a simple LED meter for Raspberry Pi, available here : http://goddess-gate.com/projects/en/raspi/raspiledmeter

Unfortunately, it's not a Python program, but a mix off PHP + bash scripting. I suppose it won't be long to rewrite it with Python. But when I wrote it, I didn't know this language (I started learning it recently).
