I follow this thread. Been running the 4.9 kernel for some time now on two of five Pi here for the purposes of helping the testing along.
No need to be rude. I've been using Linux for business and personal use for over 20 years. The question i posted was valid because I haven't come across the problem before.

I like the way it works now. I just think the RPF folks should remove rpi-update so that folks have to positively do something (and hopefully think about it) to get rpi-update running. Then apt-get install rpi-update can give them the details of why they really won't want to run rpi-update.

Two of my Raspberries are already running Raspbian Squeeze - which really isn't ready for the mainstream yet.

It's running some sort of Stretchy Squeezy thing that isn't Jessie.

I think

Code: Select all

sudo apt-mark hold raspberrypi-bootloader raspberrypi-kernel
should do it.

In case you remember, just recently I screwed up a remote Raspbian upgrade when it was shut down in midst. Then you suggested using rpi-update, as that easily makes sure that all the bootloader, kernel and libs are the correct versions. When I did that I noticed that on my Raspbian there was no rpi-update, I had to install it first. I believe that in the past it was a part of the default install...

It's definitely still included with Full Raspbian 2017-04-10. It is not part of Raspbian Lite 2017-04-10.

Anyone using 4.9.xx? Or latest 4.9.22?

@runboy93 - I've had it (4.9.22) running on 2 of my 3 Pi 3's for about 24 hours, nothing unusual. I haven't really poked at it with a stick to see if there are any tender areas, though. Are you experiencing some kind of instability or just asking?

This just came down over apt (normal setup).
Should it have?

Yes, we updated the stable branch and rebuilt the raspberrypi-kernel package yesterday.

Quick question, since I though I had better read the opening thread properly now.
How long is Long Term Support classed as?

Not that it matters to me.

From https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... LTS-Kernel:
Linux 4.9 LTS is expected to be maintained until January of 2019.
The rule seems to be two years from the first full release. However, we are likely to upgrade our stable kernel long before then.

Running fine on Pi0, Pi0W, Pi2, Pi3, all good as far as I can see.

Thanks to the RPF engineers for this!

Just been trying to update/upgrade the download version 4.4.50 Jessie Lite.
This will be my third attempt on a third card.

Getting a screen full of "Adding 'diversion of /boot/over...... previous cards failed after this.
Takes a long time to upgrade and is not always successful.
Third time is the charm, now have 4.9.24.

Time to put a copy of 4.9.x in the Downloads?

Been doing progressive updates till now, but rolling out some new Pi's from scratch.

No wait till we regular updaters find the problems first and bring out a later May 4.9 release with whatever new stuff is needed/found.
Anyway, let them have the nice long weekend holiday.
