wget raspbian image

Sat Dec 03, 2016 11:00 am

I've been trying to obtain the current raspbian image using wget - because the Browser option keeps failing.

wget -c http://file location URL/filename /home

but the URL for the raspbian image keeps throwing a hissy.

I have successfully wgot :-) the ubuntu image this way

my reason for trying this is that my connection is very iffy and the connection keeps dropping out. So the wget command with the -c option defeats, hopefully, this problem

any advice on obtaining the image using wget appreciated, thanks, Pencoys

Maybe navigate downloads.raspberrypi.org to find the specific download?

https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspb ... jessie.zip

might be the current release at the time of writing

Thankyou, where did you find the URL ?.
I'm using Firefox and have been getting the URL by clicking on the download button and copying the link location, but all I copied was nothing to do with the files area.

thankyou for the prompt reply, I'm off to try it...

Are you left clicking through to the page that offers the torrent and zip downloads before right clicking?

Oh Yus,, left clicking all the way until I reach the 'download' page. then right click on the button that says 'download.ZIP'
and selecting 'Copy Link Location'... which gives... a URL with no filename
I get..
https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian_latest

That's why I highlighted at the time of writing, because that url may not retrieve the latest version by the time someone finds this thread at some point in the future.

I realise updates occur at irregular intervals and that the link you supplied might not be for the latest.
But. How does one locate the address of the latest released file to use with the wget command.

fwiw, It took four reconnects and three plus hours for the image zip file to complete downloading - not unusual here.
If I were to try downloading using a browser I would never have obtained the zip.

Its all very well to publish these huge files for people with a 'proper' connection. But for many in the wilds of the broadband, speed and reliability is similar to Southern Rail performance.

Start the download using the https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian_latest URL and use the -S option on wget. That will show the server responses, including the redirect to the actual file, and you can use that if the original download fails.
