PI Ethernet Problem

Hi guys,

I have googled and am unable to find a solution to my current problem.

I have a Raspbian ModB that runs round the clock connected over my home LAN, it has always been working fine. One day when I got home, my PI's ethernet seemed to be down, I tried to up it again by doing a reboot. To no avail.

This is the following I have tried.

- Tried the SD card on another Pi
- Tried a fresh install of Raspbian and booting on my PI
- Total tested on 3 Pi MOD B

None worked.

I thus got a ModB+ and got a noobs card with it at a packaged price. I was able to install Raspbian using the Noobs install. (I believe the installation was done over the network?) Anyway after the install and I boot into Raspbian, again the ethernet problem.

I have many devices connected to my home network. All which does not have any issues connecting. My home LAN set up is as follows.

Modem > Router A > Router B > Router C

Router A (DHCP Server)
Router B/ Router C (DHCP Forwarder)

What could my problem be?

Reading through what you did to find the root cause I think you pretty much eliminated a hardware problem on the Pi.
It is quite unlikely to have three (or four?) different Pi's all having a malfunctioning ethernet port.
So I guess that's a good thing to know?

With the amount of "routers" you seem to posess, I would first try to use the RJ45 connection of a system which is known to work fine.
That would simply be the next logical step in the fault finding process.

Finally! What happened was a few issues coupled together.

Firstly, one of the port on my router is gone. That's why no matter which cable I tried Ethernet fails BUT the port light still lit up.

Secondary I had one ethernet cable which was used to try connecting to different ports but failed too, BECAUSE THE DAM CABLE WAS SPOILT. TWO CABLES. Which was why I thought maybe the Rasbian build had some issues.

Then you mentioned " try a RJ45 from a system that works fine. " Everything fell into place. Ethernet cable was working which was already plugged into a working port. Pi started receiving packets!

Thx dude for the spark.
Btw does it mean the noobs installation of Raspbian isn't through the net?

Scratches head*

Only NOOBS Lite does that.
The full-blown version has a compressed image "on board".
