Can you state where you live ? Looking [img]at your posting history , some face-to-face help might be the most effective.
Do you know if any Raspberry Pi Jams or Linux User Groups take place somwhere nearby ?

It all depends on what you mean by typing in "loads" of commands.
Usually, when adding a hard drive, you edit a file or three, execute about 6 commands and then it is done. You don't have to enter the commands again unless you want to.

Use Filezilla (using ssh/sftp to send/receive your files)
Use cifs/samba (to mount the RPi filesystem on windows, it appears as a network drive)
Use MobaXterm (which includes a file manager)
Use scp or sftp from a command line
Use ownCloud running on your RPi

You usually use the Programs DougieLawson mentioned on another Windows machine.
That is you connect both the Pi and the Windows machine to the same router via an Ethernet cable , and then
use FileZilla on your Windows PC to transfer files to the Pi.

FileZilla has to be installed on your Windows Machine.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezil ... e/download

Also install Fing:
http://www.overlooksoft.com/download

Use Fing to find the IP Adress of your Raspberry , and then follow this tutorial :

Thanks ghans to the link to my blog showing how to use filezilla. I also have a blog post which shows you how to remotely find your raspberry pi IP address which the origonal poster might find useful. It uses nmap rather than fing, but works well.

I think people might have got the wrong end of the stick of the OP's question. I think he wants to know how to add a hard drive to his PI and permanently mount it without having to type in a lot of commands or editing files.

i.e.

Windows 7:

1. Plug it in.
2. Use it.

Linux:

1. Plug it in.
2. "type in loads of instructions".
3. If (when) you fail use Google to try to work out what you did wrong. Go to 2.
4. Otherwise buy sandals and caftan
5. Use it.
