Edimax WiFi Adapter - Can scan wifi networks but no internet

Wed Oct 02, 2013 2:23 pm

I just got a Edimax wireless adapter which allegedly has the firmware and whatnot already installed in the latest Rasbian image?

The USB dongle is flashing, it can scan networks, and it has a "inet" and broadcast IP Address, but the other lights on the Pi board itself aren't lighting up and I can't connect to the internet. After googling and trying for the past two and a half hours, I am kind of stuck. If you guys have any debug ideas or things to look for, I would be all ears.

Right now, I have edited only the etc/network/interfaces file so it reads:

Code: Select all

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto wlan0
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid "mySSID"
wpa-psk "myPass"

I had tried making changes to /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf but the changes made the usb no longer light up at all. The changes I made were to add:

Code: Select all

network={
ssid="_SSID_"
proto=RSN
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
group=CCMP TKIP
psk="_WPA_SHARED_KEY_"
}
Thanks!

You might want to check your router. I set up a new Pi a week or so ago, and it would not connect to the internet at home no matter what I did. I could connect to it on the LAN, but there was no internet. And all of my other Pis and machines had no problems connecting to the internet.

I can't tell you the number of hours I spent trying to solve this. Then while looking at my Comcast/Xfinity router, I clicked on the "parental controls" button and noticed that it had changed from being disabled to enabled. The new Pi wasn't on the list of "blessed" ips; therefore, it wasn't allowed to reach the internet. I disabled parental controls and the Pi started to work just fine.

I turned parental controls off the first day I got the Xfinity box because I have no use for them, and I have no idea how they ever got turned back on.

I want my RPi to have a fixed IP address and my home network is 10.1.1.0/24 (netmask 255.255.255.0). Your network is probably 192.168.0.1/24 (so you'll need to change things as appropriate).

I set it up like this:

/etc/network/interfaces

Code: Select all

auto lo
auto wlan0
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet dhcp

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual

wpa_roam  /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

iface my_net_name inet static #<== must match wpa_supp.conf
address 10.1.1.7  # <== change me
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.1.1.1 # <== change me

iface default inet dhcp
/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Code: Select all

network={
  ssid="my_SSID_here"  # <=== change me
  scan_ssid=1
  psk="my_secret_wpa_key_here"  # <=== change me
  id_str="my_net_name"   # <=== must match interfaces definition
# proto=RSN
# key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
# pairwise=CCMP TKIP
# group=CCMP TKIP
}
With the EDIMAX adapter it just worked straight out of the box.

You may want to ensure your system is up to date with all the packages by running

`apt-get update && aptitude safe-upgrade`
followed by
`shutdown -r now`

Same thing here. I bought an Edimax EW-7811Un, even though I wondered: can such a little thing do WiFi?
It can, and even easier than I thought: no need to type that 16-digit number to log in... just push the WPS button on the router, and you're online.

DougieLawson - thank you for your help, I am still kind of stuck as to what my address and net name are.. Does the net name not matter as long as it matches between the two files?

Here are my results of doing ifconfig.

The ifconfig for just wlan0 is:
Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr 80:1f:02:be:d8:ef
inet addr: 192.168.2.106 Bcast: 192.168.2.255 Mask 255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric: 1
RX Packets: 102 errors:0 dropped:108 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets: 37 errors:0 dropped: 0 overruns: 0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen: 1000
RX bytes:29344 TX Bytes 4790

If you confirm what my gateway, address, and netmask are, that would be great. Having a fixed IP address would be helpful I think, but at this point, just getting internet is my first priority.

Thanks!

I had a similar problem setting up my edimax. In my case, I was trying to setup wifi using a hidden ssid (I like the extra security). I eventually found this article: https://learn.adafruit.com/pi-wifi-radi ... tup-1-of-3 - see section on hidden networks, about halfway down the page. This was not only the perfect answer for my hidden ssid, but an awesomely cool RPi project idea! (a Pandora player)

my /etc/network/interfaces

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
update_config=1
ap_scan=2
eapol_version=1
network={
	ssid="myssid"
	scan_ssid=1
	mode=0
	proto=WPA2
	auth_alg=OPEN
	pairwise=CCMP
	group=CCMP
	key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
	psk="mypsk"
}
and /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Code: Select all

auto lo

iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto wlan0
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
  pre-up wpa_supplicant -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -B

On '/etc/network/interfaces' no quotation marks are needed for wpa-ssid and wpa-psk...

Really?

Some say they are needed, and you and others say they are not. I use quotation marks without problems. Can you point to where it defines the use of wpa-ssid and wpa-psk in /etc/network/interfaces as not using quotation marks as I can't find it.
