Raspi fail to power a webcam

Mon Sep 16, 2013 4:01 pm

Ok here is my problem.i want ot stream using motion the contents of a webcam though when i connect it to the pi and then power it up ,after 2 sec webcam led shows that gets power it stays their for another 2-3 secs then blinks and shuts off .
I think that is happening when the motion daemon starts dont know for sure though .
Can you tell me why is this happening .And yes I use a 700mA power supply .

The webcam is probably using more power than the Pi can supply. Have you a powered hub or a beefier power supply?

I got a old phone charger cut the plug and powred the pi from the gpiop pins and the power supply is 800mAh still cant handle the camera .Also tried an old webcam asuming it will draw less amps and the specific one draws 100mah as shown on the label ,
still does the same thing . Maybe the motion has the problem .

I had this happen today. Motion did not have permission to write to the directory where I told it to put the video images. As a result, motion would shut down shortly after startup.

so did you find a solution to this one ?
btw I tried streaming with mjpg-streamer too but the process fails to start also lowered the resolution just to see if it cant handle the
640x480 to 320x240 still nothing .

Hi, which model of PI is it, and can you post the motion log too.

The motion log indicated that port 8081 is already in use. The quick way to do is just reboot the pi, and try again.

Considering the Pi's tetchiness with USB webcams, whether its an established known 'working with a pi' webcam becomes crucial. I have half a dozen USB webcams the Pi won't entertain, even with the absolute latest updates. Most USB webcams consume little current, but it seems to be an obsession on this thread. I presently have a Pi running 2 USB webcams (both Microsoft VX800) without a hub or any power other than a pretty ordinary 1A phone charger. Its also powering an Arduino via GPIO from the same supply (which itself is powering other stuff including a backlit LCD display). I'd say its more likely a USB thing than a power thing.

So what sort of camera is it and what OS / updates are on the Pi ?
Don't judge Linux by the Pi.......

I have a phillips spc500nc running raspian on the pi using 700 mah power supply .
I tried ffmpeg too and it seems to be an input/output software so its not a software problem .
Should I buy a usb hub with external power supply or what ?
and latest updates are installed on pi i do sudo update ... upgrade every 2 -3 days.

There is a list of Raspberry Pi verified peripherals (I think it's on eLinux). Google for the list and check to see if your web cam is known to work/not work.

My webcam its not on the list but why it cant work i mean it makes no sense if it is being driven from a driver that is supported on the pi then why no to work .Anyway I found that my webcam is supported in open elec here https://github.com/OpenELEC/OpenELEC.tv ... ig/pci.ids
search for the philips spc500nc and you will see it . Also I found that there is a distro for pi of open elec and wondered if that could make it work ....
