Here is the driver for kernel 3.18.7+ #755 - for Raspberry Pi 1st gen. (A, A+, B, B+).
How to install
Ssh to your RaspberryPi and enter the following commands (better copy-paste to avoid typos):

Code: Select all

cd /tmp
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/67643651/mt7601_3.18.7_755.tar.gz
sudo tar xf mt7601_3.18.7_755.tar.gz -C /
sudo depmod 3.18.7+
sudo reboot

Thanks I have spent 4 days trying to compile this module and have got invalid module format every time. This worked first time though.

Is there an apt-get install package name to get the right version of the linux sources? I'd like to be able to easily re-build it myself.

I have this same adapter, and the default raspbian for the Pi 2 is .5-v7+; doing a apt-get upgrade gets me to .7-v7+ while the binary in the above link is for .6-v7+. (UPDATE: a new version is available given the links in the previous posts)

And, ideally, this driver would actually be folded into the distribution -- the difficulty of making this actually work is not a good thing for the community!

You haven't answered if the module, which was compiled for you with your ID, works (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/676 ... 601Usta.ko).
And secondly, you have Raspberry Pi or Pi 2?
Hi Alfonder,

It working Perfectly, in future please include Xiaomi ID, i will use this website for my update driver. Possible to make Pi 2 Support also? I'm going to get pi 2 :) I believe it should work.

Step:
1. cd /lib/modules/3.18.7+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
2. wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/676 ... 601Usta.ko
3. sudo depmod 3.18.7+

Done.

Thanks

Hi Alfonder,

Do you might the share how you compile the driver into step by step? which compile version you are using and what step you perform? want to learn more from you.

I'm new in linux :)

Thanks

I get wi fi card with mt7601 chip inside.
Raspbian kernel is 3.18.5-v7+
And I stuck with this version as far i don't have internet connection.
I am only able to copy by pendrive
Can anyone help me?

I like the idea to create a blog with step-by-step instructions and explanation of how to compile the driver by yourself. I hope I'll have time for it.
ginner159 wrote: have you sent your patches to the ras pi people so that it can be compiled into the main kernel for future updates?
The problem is not patch. They can't include the driver into the main kernel (package) because of MediaTek's license restrictions.

Nah, it's not that http://www.mediatek.com/en/downloads/mt7610u-usb/ the license is GPL2 or later at the user's discretion. It's probably more that the code doesn't meet Linus' exacting standards. But there would be nothing to stop Raspbian or the foundation's kernel packages including it.

It's strange. Because in the source itself there is copyright notice without GPL mention. Anyway Linux Kernel Coding Style (LKCS) is arbitrary only when a code sample gets included into the mainline kernel source tree.
Many kernel modules which don't conform LKCS are built and distributed separately, but within Linux distros.

Thank you alfonder, for your work on this.

I'm trying to obtain working versions of this driver for use in the PiKitchen (https://pihw.wordpress.com/guides/pi-ki ... artbaking/), as I have several of these wifi dongles and if configured correctly allows me to install everything and connect via Wifi.
1. I use Pi-Kitchen to copy everything to the SD-Card
2. Plugin Wifi dongle and SD-Card, then add power.
3. Wait until it arrives on the Wifi network!

A guide to building the drivers would be very useful, and I would be keen to make a recipe to add to the Pi-Kitchen which can automate the process (if possible). It would then be a case of deploying a Raspberry Pi using the recipe, get it to build the driver and then update the drivers for the Pi-Kitchen each time.

Just to confirm, the RPI2 needs 3.18.7-v7+ version of the driver to be built (if we can). More than happy to test, if that is all that is needed.

Driver is working great on RPi A+ with Noobs 1.4.0. Many thanks.

I've already posted the driver for that version here http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt ... 28#p694228. Forum mates confirmed that it works on RPi2.

Hi Alfonder,

The same kernel latest build not working anymore. I think they make some change on Module.symvers, you need recompile again and make it work.

I have this dongle: V36WL-700N-RXS
11N USB Dongle

I have Raspberry Pi 2
(just received it)

I have this:
Linux raspberrypi 3.18.7-v7+ #755 SMP PREEMPT Thu Feb 12 17:20:48 GMT 2015 armv7l GNU/Linux

I have followed this:
Ssh to your RaspberryPi and enter the following commands (better copy-paste to avoid typos):

cd /tmp
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/676 ... -v7.tar.gz
sudo tar xf mt7601_3.18.7-v7.tar.gz -C /
sudo depmod 3.18.7-v7+
sudo reboot
but no luck. It doesn't work.

when I do "lsusb" I get
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 148f:7601 Ralink Technology, Corp.

But when I do "ifconfig -a" I only get
eth0, lo and ra0

I'm completely new to this, so any help is appreciated.

Hi,
Yes, the USB wifi dongle (7601 Ralink) is defined as "ra0" and not as "wlan0"

You need to configure your network :
There is my "/etc/network/interfaces" :
auto wlan0

iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
iface default inet dhcp
And my "/etc/wpa_supplicatn/wpa_supplicant.conf"
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
ssid="WIFI_NAME (SSID)"
psk="WIFI_KEY"
proto=RSN
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=CCMP
auth_alg=OPEN
}
After, you need to redefine ra0 as wlan0 :
sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/95-ralink.rules
And enter this :
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="ra*", NAME="wlan0"
If you can't configure "/etc/network/interfaces" or "/etc/wpa_supplicatn/wpa_supplicant.conf", try to redefines "ra0" as "wlan0", reboot, and launch "Wifi configuration" (wpa_gui)
Normally, you select the Adapter "wlan0" and Scan your network (in "Manage Networks").
After, reboot your raspberry, and normally the Wifi is connected !

I hope I've helped you.
