Laptop to pi problems

Right heres the situation...

I bought my Pi yesterday from maplins, what i would like to do is have it so i can use my laptop screen,keyboard and scrollpad with my Pi, i found a tutorial on this (using ethernet cable) but for some reason when i go to ping my laptop it cant see it, yet my laptop can see my Pi... Any ideas?

Anything that i have forgotten to mention please let me know and il post all the details i have

Most modern windows are firewalled and don't answer pings. Try turning the windows firewall off.
Don't judge Linux by the Pi.......
I must not tread on too many sacred cows......

Ah... That solved it thank you :) is there anyway to allow it through the firewall so i dont have to comprimise my security?

You have to check your firewall settings and allow incoming ICMP packets. We will need your laptop Os version for more details.
