SD card trouble

Thu Feb 14, 2013 10:08 pm

Hello everybody!
First let me start out by saying that this problem might have nothing to do with the RPI. In that case, just tell me!
Symptom: SD card data amount is shrinking majorly (32GB to 55MB) after I put the Raspbian (wheezy) image on it. On the raspberry Pi, it says that it can hold 1.8gb, but on windows it shows 55mb.
How to replicate: 1. Get new SD card
2. Put the Raspbian image on it with Win32 disk imager.
3. For some reason, re-format it, and it will show up MUCH, MUCH, smaller than it's original amount.
Additional info (Probably has nothing to do with it): It was formatted on Windows 7, The SD card is a 32GB Amazon Basics SD HD, and that's about it!
I would love to have 32GB of storage for programs such as Chromium, and some other programming stuff!

Thanks in advance! :D

NOTE: Like I said, this might have nothing to do with the Raspberry Pi!

If you want to use the full memory go to raspi config (terminal window "sudo raspi-config") and do the expansion of partition (it's called something like that i can't remember exactly). You will then have (after reboot) your full memory available.

Windows is only seeing the 55MB fat partition. Not the 1.8GB ext partition.

Raspberry Pi is reporting correctly.

If your SD card is larger than 2GB, then run

Code: Select all

sudo raspi-config
and expand your root filesystem, and allow several minutes for the reboot when you exit.

and expand your root filesystem
What does this mean and how do I do that?

When you run 'sudo raspi-config' you get this menu:

Code: Select all

 | Raspi-config
 | info Information about this tool
 | expand_rootfs Expand root partition to fill SD card
Select 'expand_rootfs', and don't forget to reboot afterwards.

This will let Raspbian use the entire space on your SD card.

That 55MB partition will remain (it's required), and that 55MB bit is the only space Windows will be able to see, without enabling Windows to work with Linux paritions (can of worms, but doable).
