Wireless Firmware Installation Help

Sun Jan 27, 2013 7:02 pm

I am trying to install firmware for my wireless adapter. Following the user guide I found the correct file (firmware-ralink_0.36_all.deb) and placed it into my home/pi directory.
I then type in

sudo apt-get install firmware-ralink_0.36_all.deb

and after a few seconds of 'building dependency tree' and 'reading state information', it tells me

E: Unable to locate package firmware by regex 'firmware-ralink_0.36_all.deb'
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'firmware-ralink_0.36_all.deb'

I have done this a number of tries and checked for typos but it keeps failing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Have you updated Raspbian as in this post to see if it will automatically recognise the Adaptor ?

The firmware you download was it for Debian ARHHF ??
I will always assume you are running Raspbian for desktop and Raspbmc for XMBC !

I doubt it. The firmware should be for the Adaptor, which unlikely to be running armhf.

Firmware for external devices (unless it contains a loader program - which is usually included in the driver) is universal across all CPU types. It is a binary blob, which is copied onto the adaptor. Note the _all.deb in the filename.

apt-get won't pick up package files placed in just any directory, they need to come from a recognised source. dpkg on the other hand can.
