New Buster Install Issues installing programs

Fri Dec 27, 2019 1:50 am

My Question is can doing the below cause any issues in the future as I am not using the default repository location or maybe a different repository ?

I Just got a new pi4 for Christmas. I was having issues installing Gparted and Omxplayergui. I was able to update the pi using sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade. It seems the errors I was getting were to do with a timing out of the download from the repository. Error was:
E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?

Looking into the install readout more I see several instances of issues similar to:
Get:4 http://muug.ca/mirror/raspbian/raspbian buster/main armhf transmission-daemon armhf 2.94-2 [172 kB]
Err:4 http://muug.ca/mirror/raspbian/raspbian buster/main armhf transmission-daemon armhf 2.94-2
Connection failed [IP: 2605:e200:3:4::244 80]
Note: This error was for installing transmission-daemon as I had successfully fixed the issue and installed Gparted and Omx and needed to re-create it to make this post.

I got it working by changing to a different repository source under /etc/apt/sources.list. I got this idea by reading the following post: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... ?p=1584514 and looking for how to change where the pi "fetches" its binary files. I think I did by looking at the following documentation page: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... are/apt.md

After looking at /etc/apt/sources.list I looked around for alternatives to what I had currently had. From my googling I determined that a possible trustworthy source would be: http://archive.raspbian.org/raspbian/ From a quick look it seemed to be the same...

Thus I used the sudo nano to go and edit my /etc/apt/sources.list files to look like this:

Code: Select all

#This was commented out...
#deb http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/ buster main contrib non-free rpi

# Uncomment line below then 'apt-get update' to enable 'apt-get source'
#deb-src http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/ buster main contrib non-free rpi

#Try this other location for files to see if its better. Had issues where couldn't
#Finish downloading files...
deb http://archive.raspbian.org/raspbian/ buster main contrib non-free rpi
After doing this I have had no issue installing programs.

Just for future reference, use apt full-upgrade to update the system. apt upgrade won't install new packages to satisfy dependencies, so will occasionally break things if dependencies on existing packages change.
