Problem with raspbian buster on RaspberryPi 4B

Mon Oct 21, 2019 5:03 pm

Hello,

Do you face any problems with the latest Raspbian buster running on RaspberryPi 4B when using WiFi?
I have used 2 different wifi modules (3 including the on-board module) and all I get is problem (read timeout more specific) trying to connect to an IP for downloading libraries...

Thank you...

I haven't had that problem.

While the WiFi on my Pi4 computers is not as good as some other computers I own (including the 3B+), it's not the worst either. It works fine connecting to my router in another room at the end of the hall.

Are you using any USB 3.0 devices and connecting to 2.4GHz WiFi? USB 3.0 is known to interfere with 2.4GHz (not a Pi specific problem, some Macbooks were plagued by it as well). Better shielded cables for your USB 3.0 devices may help (or use a 5GHz network).
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

Is it specific to that IP address (URL) that gives the timeout problem?

Every command I run to download a library (to different IPs) result in error...

I've been getting timeout reached messages when running sudo apt update on my 4B. Almost every time I run it. That 4B connects via WIFI. Using 2.4 or 5 GHz doesn't seem to matter.

Maybe see if you can ping the server that is timing out?
Perform a trace route as well, to see where things fail.
Also check a known working (if any) server like Google.

If you don't know how to ping, some guidance can be found below.

I should clarify my above post. If I boot up and run sudo apt update, it runs until it gets to about the third item in the list that pops up. Then just sits there like its not doing anything, times out, continues on and exits back to a prompt. If I then run it a second time it runs fine. Apt update runs fine also. I'll try it again latter on today and write down what I see happening.

I just now ran sudo apt get update. On screen I see the following
Get :1 Http....
Get :2 Http....
Get :3 Http...
Get :4 http...
Fetched 13.4 MB in 11s
(long pause)
Error: Timeout was Reached
Reading package lists....Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state Information....Done
3 packages can be updated...
etc.

This may not be related to the OP's issue. It was something I noticed, thats repeatedly happening to me, so I mentioned it.

@ the last two posters
You're both on Raspbian Buster and not something older, like Wheezy?

Working for me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Code: Select all

tim@Pi4B2:~ $ sudo apt update
Get:1 http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian buster InRelease [25.1 kB]
Get:2 http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian buster InRelease [15.0 kB]
Get:3 http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian buster/main armhf Packages [259 kB]
Get:4 http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian buster/main armhf Packages [13.0 MB]
Fetched 13.3 MB in 12s (1,080 kB/s)

1 package can be upgraded. Run 'apt list --upgradable' to see it.

System configuration:
  • Raspberry Pi 4B 2GB (headless)
  • Raspbian Buster with desktop booting to CLI (recently updated)
  • Older RPF 5.1V/2.5A PSU (with USB-C adapter)
  • SP Elite 16GB micro SD card (OS)
  • 500GB Crucial MX500 SSD with USB 3.0 to SATA III adapter cable (data)
  • PiMoroni Fan Shim (software controlled)
  • Connected to ASUS RT-AC68U router (5GHz WiFi)

Pi 4B 4 gig running Buster with Desktop 2019-09-26. I'm updating over my 5GHz WIFI.
Latter on today I'll boot up one of my 3B+'s running Buster and see what it does.

I'm waiting for your post to see what you will collect....
I have spent many days trying to make the raspbian buster work on Rpi 4B.

I just ran apt update on my Pi 3B+ running Buster ( first release). This Pi hasn't been updated in a while. There was one extra Get, Get :5 but no timeout error. It showed 187 packages to update. Upgrade is running as I type this.

Have you set the country code (raspi-config or directly in wpa-supplicant)?

Post your wpa-supplicant file (redact the AP name and password).

Different countries have different channel layouts etc. You set your country code to match where you live. If you did the quick start on screen setup, and set it correctly, you have already set it up. You can also set it by clicking the wifi icon in the tray.

Since you haven't set your location in your profile, we can't tell you what code to use.
They are listed here.
If that doesn't help, post your wpa-supplicant file as requested.

I think we really need to find out exactly what nick8967 is doing, because it seems like it's not a typical use-case scenario.
