Headless RPz(W) weird happenings.

Mon Sep 09, 2019 9:30 pm

It has happened now a few times and I am not able to understand how to fix the "problem".

My RPz(W) is connected to my WAP. (Linksys WRT 1900acs)
The RPI is headless.

Every 18 seconds - or so - it sends an "I'm alive" signal back to a central machine.

A few times now I see the LED on it going crazy. Flashing like mad.

I can still PING the device, but can't ssh into it as I usually can.

The only option is to unplug the power.

How can I find out what is going on?

To the best of my knowledge it doesn't have exposure to the internet.
I have no ports forwarded, or stuff like that.

Thanks in advance.

Temporarily connect a monitor to it and use that to show information which might reveal what is going on.

(Oh great first attempt failed.)

Yes, in a perfect world that would be nice. (And easy to do.)

Though I can move the RPz to another (better suited) location to connect to a monitor,
the failures are random.

The last time it was more than a week before it happened.

I don't have a "spare" monitor to leave connected 24/7 for that long

Actually I only have ONE monitor and it is being used for (guess what).

So thanks, but I can't really do that.

Isn't there a command to view what has recently happened?

Similar 'dead' headless pi-0 devices on my network had me running in circles for a while.. var/log/syslog etc wasnt enlightening, and provided no clues to a problem.

Eventually i tried to reboot the router/AP instead of the PI, and on its return to service the Pi was available without any intervention???.

My problems appear to be with my router/ap loosing connection to the PI and not a Pi issue at all, I only mention it so if the same your end you dont waste the weeks/months.. i did looking at the PI..

Yeah, that can be annoying.

I have asked about the "hotplug" option here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 8&t=251021

That is a whole other problem. I would like to know what they mean by how to automate the reconnection. Because I think that would be handy for you too.

Originally I had a problem with a WAP dropping out, but that is/WAS another WAP.

I now have a new "modem" and it head and shoulders above what I had.

I also have WAP DROP OUT detection.

Although the RPz is connected to it and somehow "loses" connection, if it is due to WAP outage, it logs it locally and so when I reboot, I SHOULD be able to see that.

Alas that isn't indicative of what is happening, alas.
