Noobs Installation not work

Fri Aug 23, 2019 11:41 am

Hello everyone,

I recently broke the WiFi on my pi 3 b+, so decided to format the sd card and reinstall the os. I used the inbuilt chrome os formatting option to format it. I then downloaded the zip file, expanded it and pasted the files to the sd card and put it in my pi. It went straight to telling me to hold shift for recovery mode. Then it told me it couldn’t find the drive with noobs files. Then it went to a weird command line unlike the one in the normal os. Can anyone please explain what I did wrong and how to fix this?

Thanks,
CjScout

You formatted your SD card incorrectly as one single drive.
You need to make sure it is formatted with an MBR so that it can have multiple partitions.

So wait, what is the need for partitions? I’m not installing a image yet, I’m just putting on noobs. I thought of that and erased it using The built-in windows system. Does that have the same affect of not putting in MBR?

The NOOBS Installer has its own scheme for creating partitions on the installation medium. https://github.com/raspberrypi/noobs/wi ... -explained

You don't need to know or understand the details of this. The first thing a newly created NOOBS Installer does when first booted in an RPi is to prepare the microSD card or other media for this partitioning.

But to do so it requires a microSD card that has been formatted in the first instance as a single FAT partion.

If at first boot your card immediately went to 'hold shift for recovery' it suggests to me that this initial preparatory formatting was not in fact carried out successfully. Maybe your microSD card has spontaneously (and probably irrevocably) entered a Read-only state?

So I can’t get it out of that mode?

Also, would formatting the card using the SD associations program work?

If your just after Raspbian why not just flash a Raspbian image to sd card with Etcher. It’s much simpler.

Alternatively, PINN is an upgraded version of NOOBS

I wanted noobs because I do a lot of testing on my pi, and it has the recovery mode. Also, where could I get PINN?

After looking at PINN I am going to give it a go. I will update soon on if it works. Or doesn’t

Whether you use NOOBS or PINN, the SD card must be formatted correctly first. If you struggle to do this, there is an Etcher image of PINN that you can flash using balena etcher just like most other images. This will avoid any formatting difficulties.
