Damaged HDMI after storm on RPi3?

Hello,
There was storm at my parents house and seems like out TV Samsung has been damaged as it won't turn on. TV is currently in service center.

Short story:
CEC is not working,
I see constantly overheating (full) icon

Is there any way to verify HDMI port was damaged on parents RPI during storm?
Can I somehow measure board's components to check if something burned out?


Full story:
I'm using OSMC.

I've replaced TV with different one but when RPi3 was connected I've got no screen no matter which HDMI imput I use.

- I've took this RPi home and tried on my LG TV where I'm also running RPi3. Same issue.
- So I took out SD card from my (working) RPi3 and put it to my parents Rpi3. First no screen, but after some time screen shows up but was flickering in a way that it gets dark for few sec and than on for few sec. Resolution seemed to be wrong and CBC was not working.
- when I put parent's SD card to my RPi everyting works ok including CBC
- I've made backup of SD card from parents RPi and installed new one OSMC on the card. Connected parents RPi and turned on. Again no boot screen, but after while screen showed up with initial settings. No CBC. After while overheating icon showed up with full bar
- I connected mouse and went through settings. After completion still no CBC, overheating still shows, processor unplesantly how on touch.
- I've checked CBC settings in OSMC and everything seems fine.
- I've checked board but no ovbious burnout is visible

From your description I think it's pretty safe to say that the SOC has had some nasty voltages applied via the HDMI socket and is dead beyond repair. Quite possible that there's no visible damage to the board it will just be blown silicon structures within the SOC.
Which model Pi is it and where are you located?

I've had a similar problem. A storm took out the HDMI on the TV and Pi3.

Of course, the surge protection power board was sitting a metre away waiting for me to plug it in...
That's a thought - does the surge come through the aerial or power?

The Pi seems OK apart from that. They can run a bit hot anyway.
What's the ambient temperature there?

I still get composite video output from the 3.5mm jack, but you may not be so lucky.

Either. Aerials obviously stick up into the air, and attract any electrical charge going.
Overhead power lines are also vulnerable.
Ground strikes of lightning can induce voltage on underground cables that can damage connected equipment over a wide area -- at least a mile radius.

Same thing happened to mine, although I'm not sure what caused the surge on mine, probably misshandling on my part.
HDMI works for a few seconds, goes apesh**t and then goes off, composite still works normally.
Tried every available config option, cables, monitors, VGA adapters, nothing worked.
Never tried using the display output to see it works, don't have any screens at hand, but I still can config it to use with a CRT at least.

So is there any way to protect the gear from a surge through the aerial?
I usually unplug gear when there's a lightning show on.

yes you can get "aerial surge protectors"
and your home power can be also protected

thanks for reply. Yes that is what I'm afraid of. So I 'm looking for some way to do some measurement or test to confirm sth is damaged/waht s damaged and if it can be repaired (e.g. by desoldering and replacement of damaged part). If it is SOC it's not viable way of course.

I'm located in Czech Republic and it's RPi 3b+ I think.

Well,
seems like scrren stabilized and it's working (except booting) but CEC is not working. So no much suitable as multimedia station no more. I might use it with Raspbian as PC but for Kodi I'll probably have to buy another one or stick to controll ower mobile (Yatse, or Kore)
