Kernel Panic when connecting to wlan1

Tue Jul 09, 2019 3:17 am

I'm working on a Raspberry Pi project that runs headless as a print server. Some features need wi-fi connection, so I added a wi-fi dongle that runs a separate network with fixed IP (wlan1), so users can connect to that network using their phones and configure the local network (wlan0) in a web interface.

Everything was working fine with Raspbian 4.14.79-v7, but when I try to upgrade to a new version, most of the times I get a kernel panic when connecting to wlan1.

Wi-Fi device: Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n WLAN Adapter

Steps to reproduce:
- Install Raspbian Lite version 4.19.42-v7 or later;
- Follow these steps: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... et-sharing;
- Set a network in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf;
- Reboot;
- Try connecting to wlan1: kernel panic most of the time.

I've tested this on a lot of devices (~10), all RPi 3 B or RPi 3 B+, and they all behave like this. Reproducing the same steps listed above, but with Raspbian 4.14.79, they all work as expected.

I've checked https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux for any issues related, but found none.

I'm I missing something? On a clean installation of version 4.14.79, following the steps described at raspberrypi.org, everything works as expected. In 4.19.42 I just get kernel panics.

Not sure which driver that device uses, but one of the Realtek drivers was modified 2 months ago it seems

If you follow the link to the upstream repo perhaps you can find relevant info.

I'm seeing this as well. Same chip set, though I believe I may have seen it with others as well. First encountered with Buster, now an updated Stretch fails as well.
