Re: USB redux

Fri Dec 07, 2012 7:56 pm

Just posting an interesting observation. I finally got HD web streaming to work from a USB camera. The trick was that the software had to be able to capture data fast enough. If I set it to 5fps, it does not work, but at 15 and up all is good. This seems to be inline from the previous error data "the host controller could not retrieve data from system memory fast enough".

Link to the other thread where I link to which software this worked with:

When I use only one device (easycap) and SSH through RJ-45 and I also have a problem with USB. In my opinion split transaction isn't reason in this case. For easycap(STK1160 driver from github) USB works too slow. Maybe it is second reason of USB problem. Tomorrow I compile newest linux kernel from github, I run easycap and I put full report here.
@gsh sorry for late answer. I had some problems with kernel compilation. So, I made tests for 700MHz and for turbo mode(1GHz).

I use only one usb dvice(only easycap) and I use vncserver.

-First for 700MHz.

So, green strip on the bottom of each print screen has different width. For 1GHz green strip is narrower than for 700MHz.

@gsh, how can I help you in solving this problem?

So from what I can see here, you are using mplayer to output the video to the screen, this means you are trying to do software decode on the ARM.

I don't believe (but please correct me if I'm wrong) that mplayer is pushing video across onto the GPU to do the right thing... It looks like you getting raw video meaning that the ARM is having to pump through the data.

The ARM is not efficient in this respect copying data to a frame buffer...

Have you tried streaming the encoded stream to a file and then playing it back using omxplayer?

Hi,

I have been having USB controller issues like many others with the latest raspbian and stock 3.2.27+ kernel. Usually my USB keyboard, mouse and ethernet would all stop working within a few minutes to an hour of normal usage (light web browsing, ssh, occasional apt-get upgrade).

Last night I compiled the latest kernel (3.6.10+) from https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/tree/rpi-3.6.y.

So far my 512mb Pi has lasted all night long and I am posting from it right now... so it may appear that my USB problems have significantly improved (if not gone away).

I was not aware of a pre-compiled version of this kernel, but if anyone would like to try out the one I have compiled, you can grab it here: (hopefully it is ok to post this)

http://www.fiveforty.net/rpi-3.6.10-ker ... odules.tgz

Hope this helps.

Good to head 3.6.10 was successful for you.

Code: Select all

sudo rpi-update 788cddf57e1c9650f34b2cdea8c74410626805a9
will get this kernel (and more importantly the firmware that goes with it).

Scratch that, 3.6.10 is still not the answer. My USB devices just stopped working finally.

Any other ideas? I'm updated to the latest firmware (as of a few days ago) also.

I would like to use easycap for monitoring with motion or zoneminder and one or two tv cams.

In mplayer, I can crop or scale screen, but I have the same problem. I can reduce of fps, but I also have the same problem.

What program can you suggest for testing easycap vs RPi?

@gsh, can you prepare USB driver, which it will control by GPU(through few cores of GPU) :?: :?: It will be faster.

P.S.
Can you prepare SDK for programing GPU similar to CUDA :?:

Probably No, and No.

Both require a LOT of work, CUDA especially.

English is my second language, can you explain it in other words...
Raspberry Pi, model B, revision 2, 256MB RAM; Raspbian; Huawei E3131 modem (it works :-) ); EasyCap 4CH USB DVR (it works, but very slow)

I'm sorry for my English.

AFAIK = As far as I know (= I believe)
teh_orp is the nickname of some person. ghans believes that person is working on getting the GPU to accelerate X.

No. The Foundation has only one employee I think, and it's not him.

No, GSH works for Broadcom and volunteers time for the Foundation.

Yes, I do know some of the plans, and no I'm not allowed to talk about them!

I am new to Rpi, Nov, 2012 purchased 2 RP rev2 512's from Newark/Element_14. I hope this post contains words of encouragement.

My linux is as a commandline user and novice coder of Debian variants. I have slowly been suffering with Rpi as I come up to speed. First, I have read all the power supply and USB threads start to finish. My initial installation was the stock wheezy image (2012-10-28-wheezy-raspbian.img) on a 2GB SD card, and the troubles began. The updates through the familiar Debian package manager 'aptitude' did little to increase the random time-to-freeze of 1 min to best 24 min(idle).

Code: Select all

 apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
I now have several SD cards dedicated to versions, I believe the version at the beginning is as follows:

Code: Select all

root@raspberrypi:/dev# uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 3.2.27+ #250 PREEMPT Thu Oct 18 19:03:02 BST 2012 armv6l GNU/Linux
I praise all the regulars who put up with the chatter. I have experienced most if not all of the freeze/hangs discussed here. The USB kbd/mouse

Code: Select all

 pi@raspberrypi ~ $ lsusb
Bus 005 Device 003: ID 413c:2002 Dell Computer Corp. SK-8125 Keyboard
Bus 001 Device 098: ID 046d:c00e Logitech, Inc. M-BJ58/M-BJ69 Optical Wheel Mouse
, and four other sets of HW, gave skips and repeats, etc. and drove me to adopt a headless SSH usage, until things settled down. Even then uptime is measured in minutes, not hours.

My background is a RF electrical engineer of 32 yrs, at a major cellular manufacturer, so hardware is most familiar. Yes, the power supply matters. Beginners, don't suffer this one, get a good one. I now have a 2A switcher supply spliced into the micro-usb-connector, that has a voltage on the header (or TP1/TP2) of 5.22V idle/hung and 5.06V full out CPU&USB. A poor supply which had 4.85 & 4.75V, respectively, and doubled the problems seen.
There are various power aspects still problematic which I attribute to either board design or circuitry or more likely, grounding interconnect. Simply attaching after boot, the RCA-video or 3.5mm audio plug may cause the rpi to lockup. I suggest this is the lack of non-mutually grounded supplies of the amplified speakers, or the flat-panel Dell display. That aside, I now, do not have power problems. ( proven later by reverting to various combinations of setup.)

Skipping ahead, get the latest firmware, and updated OS, for the rock solid performance I now observe. Using 'rpi-update' in concert with 'aptitude' to be at the latest is the quick ticket to success. Given the poor uptime, even headless, it was many restarts or resume downloads before a final card image was achieved. My version is now:

Code: Select all

root@raspberrypi:/dev# uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 3.2.27+ #307 PREEMPT Mon Nov 26 23:22:29 GMT 2012 armv6l GNU/Linux
Given the solid performance achievement, I decided to stress test my setup.
1) headless; 2) 3.5 mm audio playing 'pianobar' on Pandora, Waylon and Willie; 3) 10BT half duplex wired network 4) several SSH shells to a desktop, (htop, and other scripts on performance) 5) USB/SD card adapter. 6) scp "local-read" ab@192.168.2.111:/home/ab/ (1GB file)

So lets listen to music, dup the newest SD card image in the USB adapter from the boot card using 'dd', watch the rpi cpu/memory stats in SSH shells, transfer a 1GB file back and forth to a desktop host. Pure JOY seeing the CPU pegged at 100% and Willie singing the chorus.

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi ~ $ lsusb -s 1:4 -v

I intend to use these Rpi's headless, but for the sake of this community, on to adding back theUSB kbd/ mouse/hub stuff.
Currently, seems to be solid for many minutes, but now hours will tell the satisfaction rather than minutes.

Good news toward getting a repeatable fix/flaw for the USB KBD problem.
I can repeat a bad keyboard, and then a perfect keyboard, then a bad keyboard all night if necessary. Now, I just need someone to tell me what to log during the cases so that the answer will be revealed !!!

First the setup, read the prior post to get the keyboard and mouse details which are directly attached to the Rpi, again the USB/SD adapter is present filling the second slot. Differences are that I can use either HDMI or composite without variance in the behaviour.

The steps to create a bad, no TERRIBLE kbd experience, are related to the prior shutdon having been simply pulling the power and not properly shutting down, a second power-up will recover the bad experience to a good/perfect one.

A good next boot can be done either at the terminal or Xterm. shutdown -h now. Then pull the power plug to extinguish the red LED. The next up will be flawless.

I did the 'good' to 'good' three times in succession with typing a paragraph for assurance each time.
I did the 'bad' three times for a toggle result bad, good, bad, bood etc.

What log capture will be helpful to send up?
Goodnight, won't be able to help until after work tomorrow, I'm afraid, in Chicago. GMT -6

Some USB ideas:

I do find a difference between the behaviour of 4- and 7-port hubs. The 4-port gives no trouble while with the 7-port I see strange things happening, like a USB stick unmounting and mounting again immediately or WiFI dongles not working in a specific port where a keyboard has no problems but working just fine in another port of the same hub.

This specific 7-port hub (Sitecom) is several years old and has been used in many configurations including to couple three WD hard drives to a single USB port of a Synology (Linux-based) Nas box. I've always regarded it as ultra-reliable.

As you see always 4- or 7-port hubs on the market it's not rocket science to guess that one USB input can be forked to 4 USB ports with some specific standard hardware. A 7-port hub then obviously has two of such pieces of hardware where one fork of the first 4 is used as input of the second four for a total of 2*4-1=7.

In this line of thinking something goes wrong with the Pi and the second piece of hardware in a 7-port hub giving three dependable USB ports and four funky ones.

Just my €0.02
