USB camera ?

Thu Nov 08, 2012 2:05 pm

I have tested some cheap webcams with Raspi wheezy and vgrabbj.
The cameras are tested with my Ubuntu 12.04 servers and they are working there as expected.

In Raspi the pictures get dominoed. The 640x480 picture gets broken in 2-6 parts, which are placed randomly on the canvas. The hue/brightness/contras of the parts are random also.

I tried to turbo my Raspi, but it didn't help.
MemTotal: 237868 kB
MemFree: 186136 kB

Is it possible, that Raspi is, for some reason, too slow to process the data coming from the USB-camera ?

I had a similar experience using motion.

With a Wii USB webcam (ubisoft) then I got the same issue with the random blocks.

A "Fruit Shoot" webcam works fine.

Both work normally under Kubuntu.

I have 2 webcams which each work fine, but in motion I'm having to keep them (individually, I have 1 per pi) at 320*240 or I get watchdog timeout errors

I'm just going to wait for the camera module rather than make it unstable wrestling with the notorious usb..

I'm going to connect 4 - 5 USB cameras to Raspi and use them as a simple security system in a house under reconstruction and an another similar system in our sailing club. The pictures will be sent to a server through a 3G modem. In to the server I will build the logic to send an alarm to the appropriate mobile phones.

The problem with the cameras was a drawback.

I gave it some thinking. I think the problem is somehow in some of the libraries combiled for ARM. I got to make some serious Googling.

The Pi has USB issues which stop many webcams working. Some work, some don't and some work to varying degrees. Almost all of then will detect and report as installed in dmesg and lsusb but fall over when you try to access them with video software.
Don't judge Linux by the Pi.......

Sad. I think it still is somehow connected to the software. The last error message I got was:
- "libv4l2: error dequeuing buf: Input/output error"
I'm sure there will be some solution waiting to be found.

Most people are having problems with one webcam.
So, forget about connecting 4 or 5 to the Pi.
You could try such a setup on an Intel atom board if you are seeking for a low power fanless solution.
