Raspberry pi 3 not accessing websites

Thu Aug 09, 2018 1:51 pm

This has been going on for a while now, and I have been trying to fix it as of late. My raspberrypi's Chromium browser does not access websites, it just loads them, and loads them, ad loads them. Eventually, an "unable to reach website" (or something along those lines) message pops up...then it keeps loading. Going to google.com works fine, going to youtube.com works fine, using google applications, like docs and drive, works fine; but, apparently, nothing else but those.

I pinged my ip address out of curiosity, lost all packets. I pinged google.com, youtube.com, and google applications (docs.google.com, drive.google.com), all packets got sent back.

Something's wrong, I can feel it. Could someone help?

Start by clearing the browser cache.

Also web browsing on the pi can be a little slow, especially with a lot of open tabs.

This did not do anything. I went to settings > Advanced > Clear browsing data, and cleared everything for good measure. Nothing changed.
The strange thing is, only Google related websites seem to be loading well (Youtube, Google, Docs, etc.). So, I don't think it's my pi's browsing speed in general.

I had a problem like this some time ago on my Windows Desktop when I could not load this forum website on any browser.
I could load it from a different location on a laptop.
I reset the router but the problem remained.
I then change the router DNS from the default ISP provided one to Google DNS and the web page loaded.
I left the DNS set to Google for a couple of days and then returned to the ISP DNS.
I presume your pi is up to date (Stretch Desktop)?

I believe my pi is a raspberrypi 3 model B. Also, can you take me step by step on what you think might fix this. I'm not very good with networking.

Image with desktop based on Debian Stretch
Version:June 2018
Release date:2018-06-27
Kernel version:4.14
and have you updated it recently?

Well it would to if I was running a rpi at the moment , but I'm not.

But it looks good.

While you have the terminal open type

Code: Select all

sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade
Then reboot and check the browser

Nothing was changed by this, it seems. I ran the same tests as in post one, no differing results.

Well I don't know what else to suggest.

You can either make a new image (save any important stuff) or try the DNS change I suggested earlier, unless someone else comes in in with a suggestion.

If you look up your router help files you should be able to find out how to change the DNS, or you can reset the router to its shipping condition if you have the necessary information from your ISP to restore its settings (you can make a backup first).

Reinstalling Raspbian fixed the problem right away.
