SSH from Mac to Pi (3 Model B+) not working

Fri Jun 08, 2018 12:33 pm

Hi guys, new to the forum so apologies for any transgressions here.

So i've been using an old Pi (Model 1 Revision B ~ 2011.12) for awhile and happily SSHing into it from my mac terminal which is essential for me to be using scp to copy code and files back and forth.

No I'm using a new Rpi 3 Model B+ (And i have to for scaling up a project for which the old Pi was a prototype) and I cannot SSH into it from my mac even though I have set it up identically.

I have gone through all the usual setup and troubleshooting steps including:

* using sudo raspi-config to enable SSH
* placing an ssh file in /boot
* using ssh-keygen -R <host> on my mac in case of remote host Id complaints.

What's more is that when booting up the new pi I get a warning message of "SSH enabled and default password has not changed" dialog box, the same as I got on my old Pi which tells me that SSH is enabled.

The error I'm getting in my mac terminal when i try to SSH is an "ssh: connect to host port 22: Operation timed out" error

and when i ping the pi@ I get mostly Request timeout for icmp_seq x (with x incrementing continuously) but occasionally a packet does get through!

Finally when I ping or is the IP of the ethernet connection from mac to Pi) FROM the pi I get normal packet transmissions.

I'm thorougly confused as to why the SSH is not working please help!

Welcome to the Raspberry Pi forums.

Thank you for a clear description of your situation and the checks you have made.

You haven't said how you have determined that is the IP address of the new RPi3.

Since you have access to an alternative command line interface, what does

Code: Select all

ip addr

Here's what I do:

1. Write raspbian image to SD card with etcher. After finishing add a ssh file into boot partition (no extension like .txt)

2. Plug Ethernet cable from Pi into router and boot up Pi

3. Login to router website and find the IP address of the Pi

4. Open terminal and type ssh pi@(ip address)

5. After sshing type Sudo raspi-config

6. Enable VNC

7. Use VNC to open to raspbian desktop

8. Turn on wifi and such
1 * Raspberry Pi Zero W, 1 * Raspberry Pi 2, 1 * Raspberry Pi 3 1 * Raspberry Pi 3B +

A request timeout means you are trying to connect to the wrong IP address.

How did you determine your Pi is at ?

If you are configuring a static IP, how are you doing that (hint: it's no longer done in /etc/network/interfaces, use /etc/dhcpcd.conf)?
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?
