WiFi 802.11ac 5GHz DWA-171 28MB/s SUCESS thanks to MrEngman

Thu Nov 17, 2016 3:24 pm

Dear Sirs,

I just want to say that thanks to MrEngman I've got in my rpi3 a fully working D-Link DWA-171 wifi dongle connected to my 802.11ac WiFi @5GHz. It´s totally stable and the throughput is 28 MB/s in spite of the rumours that the Pi's USB 2.0 480 mb/s port would be a bottleneck.

To install the proper drivers it couldn't be any easier thanks to MrEngman's ` install-wifi ` script, just plug the wifi dongle into the pi and then do:

Code: Select all

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/install-wifi.tar.gz
tar xzf install-wifi.tar.gz
./install-wifi
Check with ` iwconfig ` that you've got the new wlanX port, then run ` wpa_passphrase 'SSID' ` and copy-paste its output into the proper config file with a ` sudo nano /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf `, then ` sudo ifdown wlanX ; sudo ifup wlanX ` and you should be good to go.

To test the throughput I ran an ` iperf -s ` on another machine that's connected via gigabit ethernet and then did a ` time iperf -n 256M -c server.local ` in the Pi which gave:

------------------------------------------------------------
Client connecting to server.local, TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 43.8 KByte (default)
------------------------------------------------------------
[ 3] local 192.168.10.17 port 59522 connected with 192.168.10.110 port 5001
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 3] 0.0- 9.0 sec 256 MBytes 238 Mbits/sec

real 0m9.187s
user 0m0.020s
sys 0m0.710s

Meaning that I got 256[MB]/9.1= 28.1 MB/s (WoW!)

MrEngman firstly THANK YOU VERY MUCH, and secondly please post your paypal email I want to donate for you deserve at least a beer or two, or whatever.

Cheers,
Jorge

That download link now gives a "ERROR 404: Not Found".
Any suggestions?

Link works OK for me, however, there is now a new install-wifi script which you should use instead of that older one.

I have made a new script which will automatically install the right driver version if it is available. The script can be downloaded and installed using

Code: Select all

sudo wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/install-wifi -O /usr/bin/install-wifi
sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/install-wifi
Use command sudo install-wifi -h to show information on how you can use it to download or update the wifi driver. This script will automatically determine the wifi you are using and search for the correct driver to download for the kernel version you are using. The script can install wifi drivers for wifi modules using 8188eu, 8192eu, 8812au, mt7610 or mt7612 drivers.

Thanks ever. Worked like a charm. I wonder if I had typed in a -0, or -o instead of a -O

Does this dongle require a USB powered hub? Or can it work plugged directly into the RPI?

Hey MrEngman - none of your links to your dropbox seem to work.

Hey MrEngman - none of your links to your dropbox seem to work.
Dropbox made a major change to their web site yesterday and its really screwed things up. Really annoying to say the least.

I have moved some of the drivers to a new site. You will need to download and install a new script to use the new site.

Download and install the new version of the script with commands

Code: Select all

sudo wget http://www.fars-robotics.net/install-wifi -O /usr/bin/install-wifi
sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/install-wifi
The command

Code: Select all

sudo install-wifi -h
will show details on using it.

This hopefully will let you get the driver you need. If it is still not available let me know and I will upload the version you need to the new site.

Hi. I'm trying to install the wifi driver via the install-wifi script. I have a DWA-171 and kernel revision 3.18.7+. However, the script only says that a driver does not yet exist, even though it says I need the 8812au driver.
Have I missed something, or is there not a driver for my kernel version?

Sorry about that. Having moved the drivers to a new site I am currently limited in the storage space I have available at the moment so did not copy files for 3.18.

Can you post the output of command uname -a so I can check exactly which version you need and I will copy it to the new site so you will then be able to download and install it.

Thanks much, MrEngman, for the script. It Just Works™. I'm so glad I found this thread on the DWA-171. It's nice to be able to use my existing 5GHz network for my RPi HomeKit (HAP-Nodejs) accessories.

Hi.

Is there any way to get the DWA-171 running under Libreelec 9.0.0?

I too used MrEngman's script to successfully install an rtl8812au 0bda:881a Realtek device (TP-Link Archer TU4H V1 to be precise). So thank you to him. I do question the potential longevity of the solution though due to the script looking for updates at startup. Perhaps I didn't find an already existing version of the script but if it does not exist it would be helpful to have alternate standalone version(s) that could be run in the event the website source goes away.

Cheers,

-Scott

The script updates itself when it starts so if I update it you will have the latest version with the updates included. The updates usually add new USB id's if there are new wifi modules for the drivers the script handles or could add a new wifi driver version which I've done a couple of times, but could also include other updates affecting the usage if necessary.

If you don't want to worry about updating the script you can run it with the command

Code: Select all

sudo UPDATE_SELF=0 install-wifi ......
and then it will not try to download the updated script.

Finally, if the web site with the script goes down then you will most likely be unable to use the script even if it doesn't update itself as the wifi drivers it downloads and installs are on the same web site, a Pi 2B on my own domain running an Apache web site, and so will then most likely be unavailable to download as well.

There are several versions of the D-Link DWA-171 wifi module and they use different drivers. To check which one it is, with the wifi module connected to the Pi, can you post the output of command lsusb.
