RPI3 with UPS APC monitoring & much internet GB [solved]

Wed Nov 02, 2016 8:03 pm

Using Jessie 4.4 2016-09-23 with only ups APC monitoring
RPI3 is connected to a 4G router with LAN cable and uses much internet traffic
in 1 week it consumed about 7 GB !!
Can anyone tell me why?
I use it only to monitor the UPS and have not implemented other functions
I had to turn off because it consumes too many GB
With RPI I have not much experience
Any suggestions ?
Thank you
regards
Bob

I highly doubt a stock install of Jessie will eat up that much bandwidth. I can't think of an automatic process (installed by default on Jessie) that would use anything remotely near 1 gig a day.

Are you sure you were not running anything? You can run ifconfig and it will show you the amount used by each interface, keep an eye on it for a while.

Hi Moses,
yes, I'm sure RPI3 consume many GB. In fact, after stopping everything it is back to normal.
Internet traffic is highly variable and ifconfig does not allow me to understand what he's doing.
I should disable any automatic update, but how?
In these conditions I can not keep it on because in a few days would end all GB available
Does anyone know how to disable each Jessie update or connection ?
Only UPS monitoring is possible ?
Thank you

Bob

I've used many raspbian releases, and I don't ever remember a stock one being heavy on bandwidth.

You need to figure out what is using your bandwidth. You can do the following to see interface stats..

cat /proc/net/dev

or for more detailed info install a traffic monitor..

sudo apt-get install iptraf
and then run it
sudo iptraf

Select your interface(s) and take a look. You should be able to figure it out from there. I believe there are other traffic monitors that will display per process usage too.

Many things can be responsible.. a hacked Pi or router, another machine, a one time update or process? You need to do more digging.

Hi Moses,
after about 2 hours of iptraf I not see abnormal traffic.
In recent days, during the various tests to enable apcupsd, I suspect that it remained active SSH via WAN..... :?
With iptraf via LAN I see several MB of SSH and NetBios traffic (...in short time...) between my PC and RPI3....

I will make other checks with iptraf ..... see what happens.
Thanks for your help.
Iptraf is very useful

Hi Bob,

Glad you are getting closer to figuring it out. Iptraf is cool, the old school text/curses interfaces just work.

I try not to leave anything open on the WAN/Internet any more. While your usage does seem a bit high, I can see heavy scanning on ssh using up a good bit of bandwidth.

Hi Moses,
after several days of control I see that the situation is stable.
So the conclusion is that my problem was caused by SSH via WAN.
I did not think SSH occupy so much bandwidth.
I must be careful when working with 3G/4G router....
Logically using the ADSL do not notice the problem ....

Bob
