Can a Pi Camera really kill a R-Pi3?

Wed May 11, 2016 7:47 pm

Hi
Posted this on Monday, but got no replies.
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=147575

Been using a R-Pi3 for a couple of months now, with no problem. Bought a Pi Camera & fitted it.
Powered up - No Boot - in fact no Activity Light - Power Light is fine.
Checked all connections, powered up again - same problem.
Tried again without the Camera plugged in - Same again !!!!!
Read the "Won't Boot Sticky". Tried again with a previously cloned SD card & with a card from my new R-PiZero,
same problem - No Boot - No Activity Light.
Tried the SD card from the Pi3 in the PiZ - booted up fine.

So seems the Pi3 has died !! Coincidentaly with plugging in the camera !!

Sent an email to info@raspberrypi.org and got the reply:
"No, it is not possible that the Camera Noir V2 will have killed your Pi 3.
It is more likely that a short occurred whilst connecting the camera."

The Pi was off when camera connected & connection looked to be correctly aligned.
( I am familiar with this type of connector ). Pi was also in case on a clean table - so no shorts on a messy work bench.
But could a misalinged camera connection really kill a Pi.?
Looking at the connector diagram I would have thought it unlikely.
If it was so sensitive to misalignment of the connector - surely there must be many damaged R-Pis - as the camera is quite popular I gather.

Can anyone venture an opinion on this?

Thank you in anticipation.

Gavin

I've misaligned them a lot, never broke the PI.

So not sure what might have caused this.

Thanks Jamesh.
I thought that would be the case.
Pi must have died coincidentaly - Can't see why else, as the Pi was in a pi-case - so no stray bits of wire about.
Should be able to get a replacement from CPC-Farnell if it was not me being clumsy.

OP - please don't raise duplicate threads. I've locked your original one. Please don't do it again; it's against the rules here.

Sorry Liz - I am duly chastised
But I was desperate to get an opinion on whether a misaligned camera connector could have killed the Pi, or why it might have died on me.
I had asked a slightly different question in my second post as there was no response to my original query. But apologies again.
