Connecting to a 7inch HDMI LCD

Tue Apr 12, 2016 10:45 am

Hi Forum,
I recently purchased a Raspberry Pi 3, and a 7inch HDMI LCD Capacitive Touch 800x480 screen from eBay. The screen came with image files for Raspbian and Ubuntu with the drivers already on them, but unfortunately they only support up to Raspberry 2. I currently have Ubuntu installed on my Raspberry Pi 3, and it works on my TV.

Is there a way I can perhaps configure the config.txt file, or download a new img file that will allow me to use my HDMI LCD screen? Probably doesn't help that the screen doesn't have a brand name.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum.
As the screen has a HDMI connection, you wouldn't normally need any special driver for it to work on the pi. It may need the /boot/config.txt file editing for correct resolution, etc however.
If you have a spare sd card why not download and use the latest raspbian (for example) OS and just see if it works?

As mentioned HDMI should just work. The drivers are for the USB touch screen part. Try and see. If it does not work then contact the seller.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated Raspbian Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately nothing has worked so far. I contacted the seller and they said "it doesn't support the software for pi 3." Is that a thing? I managed to find out the brand of the screen, and found these websites which explain how to install the drives/images for all the other Pi's but Pi 3.
Any help would be appreciated, otherwise I'll just have to purchase another Raspberry Pi.
Many thanks

I guess if it doesn't work straight away with the HDMI cable then there's something else wrong?

Add these lines below to the bottom of the config.txt file

hdmi_group=2
hmdi_mode=1
hdmi_mode=87
hdmi_drive=1
hdmi_cvt 800 480 60

Agree with previous post.
Many of the small HDMI displays don't properly implement the feature where the device returns a valid EDID block, which is how the display explains what resolutions etc are supported or preferred.

Mostly, once that is sorted, the touchscreen is either SPI (so the Pi physically attaches via the GPIO port, or USB, where it is plugged in and the magic USB stuff just detects it and loads the relevant drivers. [Obviously, that last part is a gross oversimplification].

No, I can't think of anything funny that won't offend someone if they want it to...
