What happen if i short "RUN" header with wire while Pi is id

Mon Feb 22, 2016 7:20 am

As mentioned on the subject, anyone did this before on their Pi? Any damage done on the SD card if we did it while Pi is idling?

I did it out of curiosity, and Pi restart on the spot. But it did not go through normal reboot procedure it seems... (No message shown on monitor) My Pi reboot straight away. So i wonder will that cause damage to my Pi or the SD card.

Thanks.

Shorting the RUN header will do an instant restart from cold. Any data that hasn't been written to the card will be lost. If the card was in the middle of doing internal housekeeping, it could be damaged. The filesystems will be checked on restart and will hopefully be OK.

Doing that while the Pi is idle (depends what it s doing in the background!) is the safest time to do it, but not recommended unless your Pi has "locked-up".

Even safer is to use it for its intended purpose, waking the Pi up from halt/poweroff. That's why it's labelled "RUN" and not "RESET", even though as the OP has found it can abruptly do that too.

Noted. I shall not use this unless necessary.
