OpenGL driver in new Rasbian image

Tue Feb 16, 2016 8:45 pm

Dear all,
I tried to activate hardware graphic acceleration and the system does not boot up anymore (no HDMI signal found). Changing safe_hdmi boot in config does not help either.
Any advice on how to revert to software graphics acceleration?

Thanks!

Edit config.txt from another computer (any decent text editor will do)
Comment out the line that looks like

Code: Select all

dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d
by putting a # in front of it.

Thank you very much! That was it. I knew how to edit config.txt but it was not obvious that vc4-kms-v3d stands for hardware acceleration.

Resolved.

I have the same problem and I need the HW acceleration.
Any idea how can I solve this?
(I've tried on a cheap, old TV, and on a brand new 4K Samsung TV aswell. The results were the same.)

Remember this driver is alpha/beta status, and not guaranteed to work...

Ok, but is that because it is RPi 3?

All RPi's have a Video Core 4 VPU, though the BETA OpenGL Driver Stack requires the extra memory of the 2B & 3B.

Though it works it is far from optimised and some software conflicts... ;)

the really slick screensavers work great
http://rss-glx.sourceforge.net/
best ones are lattice ( flying donuts)
and the matrix one, stunning best ive seen

to run i just doubled clicked on each screen savers executable and ran it directly. each screen saver has different settings in an xml, file.
so each time you run them they seem to select random settings
think they were in usr lib xscreensaver
worked great on my pi2

problem is with my pi3 if i enable open gl driver i just get the big rainbow square, my power supply must be too small

nope, I have 6A power same thing... just black screen!

It's a RPi 3 problem. Shame, both 64-bit and OpenGL doesn't work...

OpenGL experimental driver sets display parameters from deep outer space. My 1920x1200 monitor displays rainbow screen and then "out of range - 83 Hz/110 KHz (or something like this). Raspberry Pi 3

On Raspberry Pi 2 and 1440x900 monitor the system starts OK and is usable until I tried to run a fullscreen game. The same problem, horizontal refresh over 100 Hz and "out of range" message.

Well not everyone is so negative about the PI3 !

By enabling the driver, installing the Neverputt package and starting the game... Simples !

I think it only works on selected monitors. What's yours: resolution and Hz?

Has anyone figured out why it's not working for everyone with the Raspberry Pi 3?

I get the Rainbow on boot, then the display just powers down.

One thing to note, I'm sure it was briefly working before I ran rpi-update - maybe an incompatibility with the firmware/kernel from that branch? I've a second RPi3 here so I'll experiment with a clean install just as soon as my new sd card arrives.

It doesn't work on RPi2 either if you have the wrong screen... Same failure rainbow square then black screen.

What's the "wrong screen"?

Basically a screen that doesn't work. I have an old 15" TV/DVD combo screen that does not work, but my 2 year old Samsung does.

It's most bizarre as faults go. Must be something to do with HDMI EDID detection and implementation in the new driver. I'm sure it will work eventually

Are we sure it's EDID and not resolution or refresh rate? I get the same result whether I force the display type and resolution or allow it to be detected through EDID. I'm using a standard 1920x1080 monitor.

@texy @jamesh please let us know (in this thread if not in the blog) when this is solved.

Can't wait to try OpenGL and LWJGL can't really start integrating before this works!

Beg or borrow another monitor until that happens.....

Keep an eye on blog posts etc, new releases with big change are usually announced like that.

Hey, so I got stuff working on 1080p1370x768 and it's awesome.

Any release date for the OpenGL driver to work with video too?

Just some feedback about RPi graphics drivers in general:

- at 1370x768 both drivers work. (which is kinda funny since linux on x86 ignores this resolution completely, even discrediting it as an unsupported resolution, and falls back to 1920x1080)
- on 800x600 only the experimental driver works!?
- on 1280x800 only the legacy driver works.

It's a mess.
