The Sound of (HDMI) Silence

Wed Apr 01, 2015 4:23 pm

Hi All-

I've got a basic sound diagnosis problem that's been eating up my hours without getting anywhere.
(It's frustrating, because sound isn't needed for my current project; but I do need to know if this is a hardware or software issue, as my Pi 2B is a new mobo.)

The Pi 2B works flawlessly on the HDMI video side, but I cannot coax any sound out of it.

For a monitor, I'm using a Polaroid 17" LCD TV with internal speakers. (The problem is not in the HDMI cable or the TV, as I substituted in a DVD player and the sound output worked fine.)

I found a couple methods online for setting audio to HDMI; such as : sudo amixer cset numid=3 2

and using raspi-config sudo raspi-config > Advanced > Audio > HDMI as well as

/boot/config.txt > hdmi_drive=2

I've also found methods which install more software, but I'm wondering about breaking dependencies or other stuff I've yet to learn about- plus this is early Pi info (2012):

sudo apt-get install alsa-utils
sudo modprobe snd_bcm2835
sudo aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

To test the sound, I've installed VLC, and used the browser to source Youtube vids. No joy.

Qs
What should I do next?
Is there a utility that might help?
Is there a level control, something that might be set to zero somewhere in the software?

Thanks in advance!

I'm seeing this identical situation. No matter what I change, I can't get any HDMI audio. Multiple output devices known to work with HDMI audio. Multiple cables, all known to be good cables. Every setting in config.txt relating to audio or HDMI has been tried.

How about making a bootable OpenELEC card and trying that? It should eliminate all other variables.

report?

Hi again all; I've been away & hyper-busy on other issues, but wanted to toss in a little info here.

I've now setup 3 Pi 2Bs, all behave the same.

Kodi (OpenELEC) runs brilliantly on all 3- great sound, but Raspian, even tho properly upgraded, remains silent on the same mobos, so it is likely a software setting issue.

There are several audio trial pages, such as
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/usage/demos/
none of which produced HDMI sound for me.

As soon as I get back to my Pi's, I will check into those readings.

A strange samplesize.
Now play some sound file with omxplayer.
oxmplayer myfile.mp3
or
omxplayer -o hdmi myfile.mp3

Thanks gkreidl, but no joy so far.
(I had to remember to move the mp3 from the desktop to the home/pi directory.)
Then I got this same screen response to both commands above:

omxplayer -o hdmi SonarPing.mp3

Audio codec mp3 channels 2 samplerate 44100 bitspersample 16
Subtitle count: 0, state: off, index: 1, delay: 0
have a nice day ;)

the have a nice day & smilie was built-in to the output, it's not my remark...
