DVI monitor

Hi,
I've used with a two year old RP1 through a passive HDMI-DVI cable a monitor with DVI connector (Iiyama AS4316UT). That worked fine.
Now I can use a slightly bigger monitor (Iiyama E485S) but that doesn't work: no signal. Strange is that when I first connect the AS4316 (all works OK) and then without restarting the E485S all keeps working.
It looks like the old monitor gives a signal like "ï'm connected" an the newer does not.
Any suggestions? Thanks

Monitors have a way to tell the connected device what there optimal settings are. It's called the edid interface. Maybe the newer monitor is passing some resolutions to the Pi it can't handle properly. You can override those monitor edid settings (and even ignore them totally) by editing the config.txt file in the raspberry pi sd card boot partition. You might check which are the working settings first, and set those fixed in the config.txt file. Most modern monitors show the basic parameters in their osd menu.
Just google for the information about all the possible settings in config.txt. You can edit the file on any pc (windows mac and linux) as it's on the boot fat partition. (Obvious you need a cardreader for the Pi sd card.)
