Ubuntu 18.04 and Raspberry Pi 4 support

Mon Feb 17, 2020 10:17 pm

The Ubuntu team recently released the latest point release of our 18.04 Long Term Support operating system, 18.04.4, and with that release comes support for the Raspberry Pi 4. You can download the 18.04.4 release of Ubuntu from https://ubuntu.com/download/raspberry-pi/.

I thought this was worth mentioning given some people had posted issues trying to run the previous 18.04 point release on the RPi4.

I work for Canonical and as such was involved in the testing of 18.04.4 so yes I have tried it! What specific improvements are you looking for when you say "adding gui"?

Slightly off-topic (a meta-comment), but just to suggest that perhaps you (@murraybd) and Dave Jones (waveform80) could usefully make your affiliation clearer via your forum user profiles and perhaps your forum signature?

for instance adding ubuntu-desktop-minimal, my preferred desktop, does it still require fixing the connections to use network manager, can it be installed with just wifi, will i still need to fix pulse audio stutter with the tsched=0, can cloud-init be removed with out breaking the network, etc...

I'm still going to try it later, but it's nice to know what I'm in for

also is there any desktop version to look forward to in the future, like how raspbian has the the lite and desktop version? ubuntu is obviously = to raspbian lite, but many of us use a desktop gui as well.

first thought: if there's no network it won't even let me sign in with the "ubuntu".
i setup the /boot/network-config but it's telling me there's an error on line 20 & 21, since it won't let me sign in I can't fix it.

that was a waste of time for me. i don't have a wire to plug in right now and i couldn't get wifi to work even though i fixed that error.
i'm sure it'll be fine for those who can plug in to the ethernet. oh well

just an update, finally bought 50 feet of ethernet to reach the router.
as expected plugged in everything worked fine, if your looking for just a server it's good to go. :D

desktop? haven't got around to it yet.

instructions, cause default had no wireless tools. plus booting without any connections at all would not allow login.
so everything has to be done before booting.

i figured out my mistake. i was editing the network-config file before even booting. if you just boot without touching any files, login works.
still haven't been able to make wifi work.
all netplan directions start with install this or that.

omg! i finally got in there on just wifi. you have to have exactly the right indention when editing the /etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml , i used vi and it did the auto indention for me.
now i'm going to try to get that network-config file to work.

purge cloud-init & rm 50-cloud-init.yaml, then edit 20-wifi-config.yaml, much clear.

there is no 20-wifi-*
anyways i've had enough messing with that, it's to unforgiving, you get it wrong it locks you out.
formated and deleted already. I'll just stick with raspbian.
there should be something like raspi-config to setup the wifi as well as other options.
I'm sure ubuntu could come up with something like that.

Sorry but is there a way connecting to wifi without ethernet and downloading manually wireless-tools?

My netplan Yaml generates seemingly right wpa config in /run/netplan/wpa-wlan0.conf

There is brcmf scan error -52 in dmesg and no association.

thanks

Code: Select all

/etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml
this is the file that has to be edited.
this is what it wants.

Code: Select all

    wifis:
        wlan0:
            optional: true
            access-points:
                "YOUR-SSID-NAME":
                    password: "YOUR-NETWORK-PASSWORD"
            dhcp4: true

Well, even when i fixed netplan config with

Code: Select all

 dhcp-identifier: mac
there is extreme packet loss, DNS resolving mostly not working.

It is needed to install

Code: Select all

wireless-regb
or

Code: Select all

crda
package. That got better, but still high packet loss.

Finally i went to this image based on 18.04.4:

The official Ubuntu image is labelled raspi3, but there is raspi4 image here which works fine on 4B:

The unofficial Ubuntu image to which you are linking is not based on 18.04.4 but rather 18.04.3 which was produced in August of 2019. Additionally, while our 18.04.4 images are labelled raspi3 they will also work on the RPi4.

I installed 18.04.4 today on Pi 4 using the default Ubuntu server edition selection in the Raspberry Pi Imager onto SD card. It booted flawlessly and I installed Ubuntu-Mate. It installed flawlessly. The Mate desktop is great and the system performs well. the only limitation is the SD card. I am working to move the OS to a USB3 drive to improve overall speed but haven't made enough progress to report. In the meantime, I installed java and Minecraft server (also extremely easy) to test the system under real-world applications. Everything is working without a hitch. Great system.

edit: using JaySom's easy boot from USB or SSD thread (https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 1&t=268476) and editing the /boot/cmdline.txt file in the boot partition, the system is booting from SD and running the OS from the faster USB3.

Hi, guys. Any progress on connection with WiFi?

I downloaded the ubutnu server 18.04.4 image and flash it to SD card, modify the network-config and /etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml file.
But it just can not connect to my WiFi !
Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Which desktop is generally most compatible on the Pi 4? I have ubuntu-mate currently running from a fresh install, although it gives me an error window upon loading the desktop environment. I've gone through the log files and not yet identified the problem, but it doesn't seem to affect anything that I'm doing. There are a few other desktops options:

ubuntu-desktop
xubuntu-desktop
kubuntu-desktop

come back to us!

seriously, raspbian lite + what ever desktop. is the best option.
ubuntu is targeting wired headless servers, so far now gui stuff is a pain.
