MagPi #60 - Raspberry Pi Desktop x86 ISO?

Wed Jul 26, 2017 7:15 pm

Hi all.

I have just received the latest MagPi #60 and was delighted to find the attached Raspberry Pi Desktop x86 DVD. :D
Unfortunately I then realised I hadn't bothered adding a DVD drive to my new computer. My intention was to run it VirtualBox, so I just need an ISO image ideally.

Is there, or where would the best place be to download the latest version of the ISO image (happy to do so as a torrent)?

Quite a few blogs from last year point to:
http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/pixel_ ... jessie.iso

But this one appears to be more up to date:
http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/rpd_x8 ... 017-06-23/

Is the latest one safe to use?

Many Thanks

Craig

That's the latest iso. I installed it in a VBox VM and it's working fine.
It's the first version that can be installed. The previous one was actually a Live CD/

Thanks DirkS

I can confirm it worked for me too (I have very little patience).

I downloaded the latest ISO image, checked the hash key and vaguely followed these instructions:
http://www.aoakley.com/articles/2017-07 ... ualbox.php
(The only thing I would add is that the PAE option could be ticked before ISO installation, to avoid the error message)

After installation, at the guest terminal I ran:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-x11
sudo shutdown -r now

The first two commands updated the system, the third allows for higher display resolutions and the fourth command reboots now that everything has been updated.

I was surprised there is not a link or even a mention of the ISO image on the main download page:
https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

I can also confirm the desktop runs very well on a good PC/VM.

Happy hacking!

Craig

It is classed as BETA software as it still has a few foibles on some hardware, the next release will be based of Debian Stretch x86-32 which hopefully will allow for a full release.

I personally have a slightly "knackered" Acer Aspire 5332 Laptop with a 40GB SSD and this OS runs great installed as the only OS.

Thanks Fruity one.

That made for an interesting read.

Spooky that we both settled on the same article for the VM installation.

Fair enough if it is BETA, but if they are happy enough to send out a copy on DVD and attach it to every MagPi, could they not post a link to the same ISO version online?
