Re: flashing the SD card in Windows 10 error

No, he needs to read what others have already found out, namely that version 9926 is too old.. And that you need the explicit path to the correct dism if you are doing this on Windows 8.1 or 7.
:-)

The Class 10-ness won't come into play until boot time or later.

I found that you can grab the source files and binarys need to run dism 10 from a windows 10 iso you will need you will need the following files from the windows 10 images source foulder:

1. Download windows 10 iso image
2. Open image with 7zip and navigate to source folder
3. Copy the following files to a folder on your PC:

api-ms-win-downlevel-advapi32-l1-1-1.dll
api-ms-win-downlevel-advapi32-l4-1-0.dll
api-ms-win-downlevel-kernel32-l1-1-0.dll
api-ms-win-downlevel-kernel32-l2-1-0.dll
api-ms-win-downlevel-ole32-l1-1-1.dll
api-ms-win-downlevel-user32-l1-1-1.dll
compatprovider.dll
dism.exe
dismapi.dll
dismcore.dll
dismcoreps.dll
dismprov.dll
ffuprovider.dll
folderprovider.dll
imagingprovider.dll
logprovider.dll
vhdprovider.dll
wimprovider.dll

4. Drop the Flash.ffu file into that folder
5. Run to find out the dive number of your SD card:
diskpart
list disk
exit
6. Run: dism.exe /Apply-Image /ImageFile:Flash.ffu /ApplyDrive:\\.\PhysicalDriveN /SkipPlatformCheck

Then you are good to go! no VMs needed.

Watching the log it will try to load these from the OS but since they do not exist it will look for them locally.
Sorry about this, but I'm having trouble running dism.exe after all of the steps. I've completed steps 1-5 to the best of my knowledge, but when I try to run dism.exe it just exits out. It's probably something that I should know, but how do I run the command to flash the image with that version of dism.exe?

You need version 10.0.10075.0
Either from a current install image of Win 10 or by downloading the Win 10 ADK

Hi again,

Just to mention have managed to install the win iot on card and boots.

In the end used a vm of win 10 passing the usb reader hardware to the vm, downloaded the ADK then using the deployment tool managed to copy/populate the flash disk ...
Have not tested with the command line dism as yet but will check.
Unsure if you can pop an image of the base install so it can be used in the normal fashion .img file or if ms does not allow ???

Will update when testing the command line again.

Possibly gemlins in my win 8 machine for some reason as dism v 10 would not work either :(

Many thanks,

At very first time I was able to write image using dism command and Windows 10 IoT ran just fine. However I changed some hardware later and then it stopped booting. Now I am trying to re-write Windows 10 IoT image on the same 16 GB SD card and getting this error 87 mentioned earlier.

(Microsoft says that Windows 10 build 10069 or higher is required, and I have 10074).

But it is the version of dism that really counts, not the version of Windows 10. And dism.exe must be 10075 or later. :-) Others have tried dism version 10074 and had the /Apply not supported message.

You are using a version of dism that is too old and does not include support for writing Win 10 IoT images. You must use the version that is installed with the Windows 10 preview or by downloading the Windows 10 ADK.

hi! can you provide a resource that explains how to use Windows ADK to write the IoT file to SD card?

Do I run the commands using deployment and imaging tools enviornment program?

Here you all go:

These are taken from Windows 10 Preview ADK

1. cmd > DISKPART
2. DISKPART > LIST DISK
3. Note Disk Number of desired destination disk (we'll call it Z)
4. Download: http://1drv.ms/1KKQDdb (**Note: This includes the .ffu file for RasPi2**)
5. cmd (Admin) > cd [folder you extract the zip file to including the final DISM directory] <-- Keep Note Of This For Next Command
6. C:\Users\MBRO95\Desktop\Win10\DISM> C:\Users\MBRO95\Desktop\Win10\DISM\dism.exe /Apply-Image /ImageFile:flash.ffu /ApplyDrive:\\.\PhysicalDriveZ /SkipPlatformCheck
(**Note: Z is the disk number found from DISKPART & The full path to the dism.exe is specified in the above command**)
7. Image Successfully Written

Get a correct version (Windows 10) from:
(you may not need this, but you need an up to date DISM.exe to write the Flash.ffu which comes with this)

Microsoft ADK for Windows 10 Technical Preview for Windows
https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=526740

I run it on my W7 PC wit no problems:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Deployment Tools\x86\DISM\dism.exe" /Apply-Image /ImageFile:flash.ffu /ApplyDrive:\\.\PhysicalDrive1 /SkipPlatformCheck

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.10075.0

Applying image
[==========================100.0%==========================]
The operation completed successfully.

Hello,
You can try this : dism.exe /Apply-ffu /ImageFile:<path>\flash.ffu /ApplyDrive:\\.\PhysicalDriveN /SkipPlatformCheck
In place of it : dism.exe /Apply-Image /ImageFile:flash.ffu /ApplyDrive:\\.\PhysicalDriveN /SkipPlatformCheck
The rest remains identical.

Good day.

My response might be a bit late but I've found a topic from tomasamberg that illustrates that flashing an SD card using Windows 8.1 is possible.
I've tried it myself and it works like a charm.

That link gives you an upload of 10075 dism which does work, but also contains flash.ffu, which is large. I uploaded just the dism for those who don't wish to also download the flash.ffu file: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=3 ... file%2czip

Look here:

Convert the FFU to an IMG and dd as usual...
