Error 87 is indicating that version of DISM doesn't understand the command you are trying to run. This is expected if you're using the in-box version of DISM that comes with Windows 8.1.

Windows 10 Technical Preview, or as others have mentioned downloading the ADK should server as a work-around.

The other thing I wanted to mention is you state you're using a 3 GB SD card. Please use either an 8 GB or 16 GB Class 10 SD card as mentioned in the instructions here:

I'm not certain if 32 GB will work, but if it does please let us know. I've seen folks with larger capacities like 64 or 128 GB also having problems.
If it doesn't, then please try either an 8 or 16 GB card.

Don't think I have any 8/16 left. All been lost or handed to distant family. I'll check the back of the couch if I get desperate.

The first 'recommended' SD card on their instruction page is a 32GB.

It could be that since Amazon is stacking multiple sizes for that brand that it's defaulting to the 32 GB size when you open the link instead of the 16 GB model.

I don't think the size of the SD card matters, it wouldn't make sense with that error.

That error says you can't use "ApplyDrive" with "Apply-Image", which means you're using the wrong version of dism.exe.

Did you close all cmd.exe/powershell windows after installing the ADK? Maybe you're still using the old dism.exe.

Yes, had no problems with a 32GB class 4 Sandisk card. But not your card. Just sayin'.

You will need to provide the explicit path to the dism.exe from the ADK. Otherwise you will keep finding the Windows 8.1 one.
e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Deployment Tools\x86\DISM\dism.exe

And lastly, you are not using a recent enough version: 10.0.9926.0, it should be at least 10074

I have x86-32 Windows 10 Preview 10047 installed on an old PC

I followed the instructions and downloaded the ZIP which I unzipped, just used Command Prompt Administrator and then cd to the folder created.

My drive was shown as 1 so just typed in

dism.exe /Apply-Image /ImageFile:flash.ffu /ApplyDrive:\\.\PhysicalDrive1 /SkipPlatformCheck

and hit enter voila it created the card !

Unfortunately I can not test further as lent my RPi to a friends Son for a school project

This is from Microsoft's website. (their github)

http://ms-iot.github.io/content/Faqs.htm#rpi2

FAQ Setting up Raspberry Pi

I can't download the Windows 10 IoT Core Insider Preview image for Raspberry Pi. I see a blank screen.

We release the Windows 10 IoT Core for Raspberry Pi 2 through our program on Microsoft Connect, which also provides a platform for bug reporting and providing feedback. To be able to download the image, you need to be signed up for our program on Microsoft Connect and signed in. If you have not signed up for our program on Microsoft Connect yet, please click here to sign up. You can find step-by-step instructions for signing up or using Microsoft Connect here. If you have already signed up for this program on Microsoft Connect, and try to sign up again, don't worry. You will just see a blank page.

Please make sure you are signed in to Microsoft Connect before trying to download the image.

Why does my screen appear cropped or stretched?

This can happen on some monitors. To work around this force the board into DVI mode (vs. HDMI mode). You can read more about this here. Mount the SD card to a local PC and proceed to edit the file in the EFIESP partition. For example if the partition is mark as H drive, edit H:\config.txt by adding the following line.

hdmi_group=2 # forces DVI timing to be used

Can I set up a Raspberry Pi 2 using Windows 8.1?

You will need Windows 10 on your PC to be able to set up Raspberry Pi 2 running Windows 10 IoT Core.

Why does my SD card have to be 8gb, do you really need all that space?

The IoT Core image is under 1gb, the 8gb is meant to give you space to install additional content on your device.

The SD card needs to be class 10 because the Windows OS times out with slower cards.
Are there any SD cards that are class 10 that are smaller than 8GB?

Building from a post: viewtopic.php?f=105&t=109160

I found that you can grab the source files and binarys need to run dism 10 from a windows 10 iso you will need you will need the following files from the windows 10 images source foulder:

1. Download windows 10 iso image
2. Open image with 7zip and navigate to source folder
3. Copy the following files to a folder on your PC:

api-ms-win-downlevel-advapi32-l1-1-1.dll
api-ms-win-downlevel-advapi32-l4-1-0.dll
api-ms-win-downlevel-kernel32-l1-1-0.dll
api-ms-win-downlevel-kernel32-l2-1-0.dll
api-ms-win-downlevel-ole32-l1-1-1.dll
api-ms-win-downlevel-user32-l1-1-1.dll
compatprovider.dll
dism.exe
dismapi.dll
dismcore.dll
dismcoreps.dll
dismprov.dll
ffuprovider.dll
folderprovider.dll
imagingprovider.dll
logprovider.dll
vhdprovider.dll
wimprovider.dll

4. Drop the Flash.ffu file into that folder
5. Run to find out the dive number of your SD card:
diskpart
list disk
exit
6. Run: dism.exe /Apply-Image /ImageFile:Flash.ffu /ApplyDrive:\\.\PhysicalDriveN /SkipPlatformCheck

Then you are good to go! no VMs needed.

Watching the log it will try to load these from the OS but since they do not exist it will look for them locally.

Hi all,

Have been trying to get win 10 on pi2 with no success imaging an 8gb card at present and seem to keep seeing error below using various versions of dsim and ideas please ( ps tested with 8.1 and vm win 10 machine using what seemed to be the latest dsim.exe )

C:\Windows\system32>dism.exe /Apply-Image /ImageFile:flash.ffu /ApplyDrive:\\.\PhysicalDrive1 /SkipPlatformCheck

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.9926.0

Error: 87

The /applydrive option is not recognized in this context.

tried the dev tools / afk download on win 8.1 and using win 10 iso as mentioned, also using a win 10 build machine ... any ideas folks ?

Have you read this thread? Specifically, supplying the full path to dism, and the minimal version #?

I have tried, and can't get it working, and I was wondering if it was because the computer recognized the sd card as a USB drive if you use a USB adapter. The website (link below) I was looking at says that in some cases you need to split the ffu image into multiple parts, and then apply it. I haven't been able to do it yet, but I thought it might be helpful.

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/librar ... s.85).aspx

EDIT: Sorry about bad link, I've fixed it now.

i have tried using win 10 in a vm and using the adk on win 8 using the full path to the new dism ver etc ( without quotes ) the command suggests using ver 10 of dism but still not working on win 8 or 10 at the moment.
Am currently updating adk on win10 in case there is a version error on dism.

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.9926]
dism Version: 10.0.9926.0

will check if there are any differences in the new adk :/

Have only tested on a single 8gb card but as image is not 8gb should work correctly as windows recognises card etc unless needs to be formatted differently or formatted partition removed before imaging ( but would seem a bit daft :( )

Many thanks,
