Re: Getting sound when using VNC viewer on RPi4

Need to get back home to check these suggestions.
I am now in my summer cottage without access to extra hardware or shops etc.
So it will be a few days before I can go on now that VNC turns out not to support audio.

Re: Getting sound when using VNC viewer on RPi4

If the pi is in the same room as you are working from , you could just attach a set of powered speakers, and set the audio output to the 3.5mm audio jack in raspi-config. then you have audio and can still work via VNC I will test that when I get home. Maybe I can even connect earphones instead so n...

Re: Getting sound when using VNC viewer on RPi4

Too bad, I am developing a video editing program using Free Pascal and Lazarus and utilizing VLC libraries. It is meant as a cross-platform program so I was going to test it on an RPi4 on which I have installed the development system and VLC. So I figured I could use the VNC connection to handle thi...

Getting sound when using VNC viewer on RPi4

I have a headless RPi4 (2 GB RAM) on which I have enabled VNC to access its desktop. It works fine for what I have been doing, but today I was trying out using the VLC video player and it too works EXCEPT I get no audio on my Windows 7 laptop. Is there some setting (and if so where) to enable audio ...

Re: Apache does not serve some symlinked video files

Yes, I did not use full paths in the ln command... Relative paths are no good it seems like, after I changed the command to use full paths when creating the symlinks they are served out properly. I have scripted the creation of these links now so I can run updates through cron nightly. Seems to work...

Apache does not serve some symlinked video files

I have an RPi3 with apache2 serving a video website for my family's use. The video files are inside the home dir (~/www/videos) in subdirectories depending on type. I have symlinked the videos dir as sudo into /var/www so they can be accessed and served out by apache. This works fine and I can edit ...

Re: Problems using PPTP VPN server on RPi from Windows

I stopped using PPTP VPN altogether since it is inherently unsafe.
Instead I have installed and used OpenVPN on multiple RPi units and my Linux systems too.
It works much better and is a lot safer too.

Re: How to set a self-signed server as trusted?

SOLUTION FOUND: I ended up doing as follows on the Kodi server (RPi3): - Created a text file myserver.crt in the home dir - Edited it using nano - Copied the text of the selfsigned crt file from the server side into nano - Saved the file - Copied it as sudo to /usr/local/share/ca-certificates/ - Ra...

How to set a self-signed server as trusted?

I have an Ubuntu 18 LTS server, which is used for Subversion and while setting up Apache Subversion a couple of years ago an SSL certificate was generated and self-signed. Then Svn works OK after each client initially has set the server certificate as trusted as part of first login. Recently I have ...

You can start vncserver as user pi from /etc/rc.local like this:

Code: Select all

sudo -u pi vncserver -randr=1400x900
Thanks,
I did not know that you could set the user when starting something from rc.local.
Now back to using this rather than cron and it works just fine!

I also modified the /etc/rc.local file by adding this at the end before exit: #Start RealVNC in virtual mode with resolution 1400x900 px vncserver -randr=1400x900 Unfortunately this was only half a solution.... The screen created by the rc.local command is inaccessible because it is owned by root a...

Re: Installing Raspbian on headless RPi4 - how?

SOLUTION FOR STARTING VNC I fixed my problem of how to start the vncserver process on boot by adding this to crontab: @reboot sleep 120 && /usr/bin/vncserver -randr=1400x900 This makes the pi user run vncserver 2 min after boot and then it will be possible to log in via VNC to the virtual desktop.

Re: Installing Raspbian on headless RPi4 - how?

In fact I put this into the /etc/rc.local so it would always be done on startup. Now I commented out that line in rc.local and instead after a reboot I logged in with PuTTY and executed this command: $ vncserver -randr=1400x900 Then I went back to RealVNC and used the connection that was not allowe...

Re: Installing Raspbian on headless RPi4 - how?

Thanks! I will test this ASAP! My use case is normally to go to the RPi desktop via VNC, never to connect a cable to a monitor. So the "virtual" mode is probably exactly what I need! :D Most of my RPi units are working as servers in some setting and I only use the CLI interface via PuTTY. Some of th...

Re: Installing Raspbian on headless RPi4 - how?

If you're going to use your RPi headless, you might also want to disable the graphical desktop environment from raspi-config. This makes the RPi boot faster, run faster, use less memory, run cooler, use less power, etc... sudo raspi-config -> Boot Options -> Desktop/CLI -> Console One of them (the ...
