yah I tried that but it crashed OS X so I use smb because it's most popular so works everywhere (or ssh/scp/sftp/sshfs )

It's not hidden, it's just that windows has limited partition table and file system support so linux is the best way. use linux as an alternate boot option, or use linux in virtual box or use linux in cygwin (less good option). RPi-Cam-Web-Interface would use less of yoir time, something custom in c would use less cpu time.

check your logs, or run top to varify ram is the issue. I have 7z-ed ~4GB on the pi1a and had no issues so you cold do it in chunks but that would likely reduce your compression ratio. Likely RAM is the issue, using a swap file will work but might slow it to the end of the universe. The reason 7z is...

use a rpi running smb and ampache for your server connect your speakers to an amp (and/or HiFiBerry) to a rpi running mpd. I would use a rpi2 for server and clients because a and b have low quality audio, and the 0 is not yet available, the a+ and b+ have less ram for about the same price once s/h/t...
