also compiling is hard ,
very hard -
compiling for speed or space can be conflicting and difficult - unrolling loops can help in some cases but not in others....
but in general a compiler is better than you .

.... Since this NAS is exclusively meant to support my mediabox I hook my RPi directly into a USB port on the mediabox for power (using a micro USB to USB A cable). I connect my external HDD case to an USB port of the RPi (for data) and to a second USB port on the mediabox (for power) using a Y cab...

1) use the hdmi next to the power
2) boot it clean - enable ssh on it
3) find it's ip address via your dhcp server
4) ssh in and do a tvservice -s
