That's fantastic. Thanks for letting me know about it. I'll add this to the listing.

Pi Day in the USA

Hey Everyone, Pi Day is on March 14th and we'd love to support and promote US user groups to get together that day. Not only does it fall on a Saturday, but it's a special one because there's even more precision. So bonus points for anyone that celebrates Pi moment: 3/14/15 9:26:54. There are alread...

Hello! I'd love to see Raspberry Pi users gathering in Tucson. We're encouraging user groups across the US to get together on Pi Day, March 14th: http://www.raspberrypi.org/prepare-for-pi-day/ I'll send out a tweet from the official account to see if I can round up any other Pi locals!

Re: import RPi.GPIO as GPIO RuntimeError

I thought I might take a punt on the 'dev version' fix but when I tried the link to Sourceforge.net provided by Tavalin above I got an 'Untrusted Connection' warning from Firefox. Yeah, it appears Sourceforge is down right now. Here's what I'm seeing: The sourceforge.net website is temporarily in s...

The Raspberry Pi 2 has excellent compatibility with most applications, so I wouldn't consider that as a trade-off.

There's a Raspberry Jam on the third Saturday of every month at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. I'll refer the organizer to this thread to provide the latest details.

Use whiptail or something to provide a graphical interface, but then it can be used headless via SSH.
If you were to do this, I would suggest contributing to raspi-config instead of making your own.

Re: Getting Started with Raspberry Pi

Thanks for all this feedback, Bob. I really appreciate it! I'm keeping all this together and will see what I can do about making appropriate changes in future editions or printings of the book. In the meantime, please keep the feedback coming; this is fantastic. And if you feel so inclined, errata f...

Re: Getting Started with Raspberry Pi

Bob,

Thank you so much for your support; I really appreciate it. It also makes me so happy that you find the closed captioning on my MAKE videos useful. I'll continue to do that. I'm planning to make a similar RPi GPIO video.

Getting Started with Raspberry Pi

Over the past few months, Shawn Wallace and I have been working on Getting Started with Raspberry Pi, a book for MAKE. I'm happy to say it's now available from lots of different book stores. It covers RPi basics (hardware you'll need, getting around in Linux), Scratch, Python, GPIO, and some web ser...

Re: Python Sound Sampler with Pygame.Mixer

A fresh install of Raspbian and a new board did the trick. I first tried the old board with a fresh install, and ran into even more kernel panics (like when doing sudo apt-get install git), so I swapped out the board and I'm all good now.

Thanks again for the help.

Re: Python Sound Sampler with Pygame.Mixer

toxibunny, thanks for posting your code. I've modified my pygame code to more closely resemble what you have and I'm still running into this issue. I'm trying to narrow down what the exact problem is so I'll be trying a fresh Raspbian install tonight. I'll also try a new board on the off chance it's...

Re: Python Sound Sampler with Pygame.Mixer

I suspected it was pygame's sound mixer, but now I'm thinking it's ALSA that's causing the problems. I created a new script, this time, it calls aplay to play the sound files. Eventually, after a bunch of plays, the script becomes unresponsive and I can't use CTRL+C to get out. I'm able to switch TT...

Re: Python Sound Sampler with Pygame.Mixer

I dunno. Try triggering the samples with keyboard presses, or just printing to screen with gpio presses. Separate them out and see where the fault is... Thanks for this idea. I was only guessing it's a sound-only issue (because I'm much more familiar with GPIO and haven't run into this issue before...

Python Sound Sampler with Pygame.Mixer

I'm creating a sound sampler using Pygame's mixer along with the RPi-GPIO module and running into an issue. It works great for a while, but after a maybe 12 to 70 button presses, it eventually locks up (won't play any sounds) and I'm unable to hit CTRL+C to get out of the script. I'm able to jump ov...
