Well not much information about the make/model

Linux Mint is installed on x86 architecture

The Raspberry Pi is ARMv6 architecture

Also you will need an Operating System on a SD Card as the Pi will do nothing except light an LED without, maybe that is your issue :twisted:

If you have installed Raspbiam "wheezy" then MIXXX is in the reposiotry, from command line

sudo su
apt-get update
apt-get install mixxx

Just plugged it in to USB and worked no configuration and keyboard worked under Linux with no issues what-so-ever

The link to Raspbian Installer is not OLD, it works perfectly fine as I undertook this exercise recently and I ended up with a fully function Kernel 3.6.xx Raspbian, the only thing missing is the RPF extras which are included in Raspbian "wheezy" As I have Lubuntu on my main machine used GParted to ...

I installed gcc recently and just re-installed on alarmpi, not issues what-so-ever... version of gcc-4.7.2-4 :roll:

Though you have a Pi it is not feasible to install VLC on it, VLC is installed in an Operating System !

Please can you post output of the command line commands: lsusb & dmesg | less

Lastly VLC does not work well on the available operating systems available for the Pi
