But if you need static IP addresses, it's usually best to reserve the IP for each Pi's MAC address in your router setup, assuming you have access to that.

This is literally the easiest solution, and my whole home network is set up this way where I need static IPs.

Thanks the raspberry password seams to work but installation fails with an error message saying something like:
cannot get private lock on package backend , close any other open package program.
That suggests an interrupted update to me.

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --configure -a
may fix it.

Re: Is it possible to use both wifi & bt connection at the same time?

You could probably script it by checking if wlan0 has an IP address, and switching if it doesn't (or switching back if it does). Thanks a lot! Will it be so difficult for the programming? A bash script should be enough. I haven't worked with BT, but a simple bash test for wlan0 could be: WLAN=`ifco...

looks easier to me.
That'll work, too. I'm more of a sed man than awk, so I didn't know about that filtering option.

But I still see a lot of cruft in the file system, whose function I have forgotten, but which I am wary about deleting because I do not know what dependencies may exist between them and other stuff that I want to keep. apt-file search FILE_NAME Will tell you if the file is owned/required by a packa...

Re: Moving Linux kernel to 4.14

I've been using 4.14 for a while on an Arch Desktop without issues. 4.15 dropped in today, which at the moment is working, but not long enough for issues. However, 4.15 introduces support for the Pi touchscreen (not an issue for my headless use, but probably of interest to some). - https://www.phoro...

This forum is insane

It's not a criticism, just an observation, and possibly testament to how popular Pi is now. I run two home machines(desktop and Laptop) on Arch, and a VPS on Debian. Since I joined the Pi world, I also have Raspbian. I'm a member of the Arch forums, the Debian forums, and here of course. And I tend ...

You could always go back to Windows, which shields the user from almost anything. Having said that, where's the fun in that?

Re: What can be realistically programmed in assembler today?

Writing in assembly, especially for someone just learning, is an exercise in futility, these days. The last time I used assembly was back on my Spectrum 48K, where I needed a fast routine to swap out sprite banks, giving me as many sprites as memory would allow, rather than the hardware limit. Befor...

Re: Show Us Your Conky!

It's a subject that tends to crop up on every Linux based distro. Personally, I love conky, though no point in posting my Pi one, it doesn't exist on a headless (and VNC free) install. I do have it on my Arch machines, though, to keep track of what I find important, both for info and early debugging.

NAS Enclosure - any good?

Does anyone have experience with the DLink DNS-310L? Having now got the PI working as a media server, and I have a spare 1TB spinner in my main rig that I can afford to sacrifice, I'm thinking of stepping up a notch. In particular, I'm interested in knowing it will work as a vanilla file server (fil...

OK, driving me nuts. I've tried editing /boot/config.txt and for me, it still gives me a 720x480. I've tried setting via raspi-config - with the same result. (raspi-config on the tiny display does confirm 1920x1080 (which is what I want). So how do I get a 1920x1080 via vnc? Sorry to hijack, but it'...

A PI 3 should be more than capable of running a browser with webmail and skype (dunno if it's been ported yet, but skypeforlinux is now out there and works pretty well) for video calls. And let's face it, aesthetically, tape the PI to the back of a decent monitor with a keyboard and an "works out of...
