Re: I need help getting started.

You always need your own tracking station, because once the payload lands it's very unlikely that the signal will reach any existing stations.

Re: I need help getting started.

To start with, have a read of http://www.daveakerman.com/?p=1732 That is a bit UK-centric, but it does mention APRS. For the USA APRS is probably the best option, as there's a good existing receiver network. In the UK APRS isn't allowed airborne, so we primarily use our own RTTY system instead. Also...

Re: raspberry pi ultimate GPS v3 battery problem

The battery doesn't power the GPS; it's there to maintain the GPS memory when main power is off.

That allows the GPS to get a lock (position) more quickly when power is applied.

Re: Lora Gateway, Frequency and Antenna

Just to clear up some possible confusion here ... LoRaWAN is not the same as LoRa (see http://www.link-labs.com/what-is-lorawan/ for more information); it's a datalink layer built with LoRa hardware. High altitude ballooning uses raw LoRa transceivers with our own protocols that are not compatible w...

Re: Lora Gateway, Frequency and Antenna

Aerials don't like being very close to each other. The rule-of-thumb for aerials that are adjacent (e.g. hanging below a payload, which is where they should be) is to keep them at least 1/4 wave from each other. 1/4 wave is of course the length of a 1/4 wave aerial, so 164mm on 434MHz. I have on occ...

Re: Lora Gateway, Frequency and Antenna

2. Does the LORA transmit / receive on USB? OK, I've figured out what you've asked, though I still don't understand why you've asked. You're probably thinking of how RTTY works but if so, you've misunderstood that. In RTTY we modulate the frequency of the transmissions, moving the frequency higher ...

Re: Lora Gateway, Frequency and Antenna

Think I may have found the problem, whilst assembling the new Pi Zero / PITS / Lora setup, I noticed that on the Lora board CE1 is populated not CE0. So while I have been setting up the config files I have been configuring Lora0 which I guess relates to CE0?? So to wrap this up i'll set my PITS to ...

Hi; Just trying out my 2 x Lora boards, one mounted on a PiZero with PITS and the other in a shiny new RPi B 3 (just arrived from Mr DHL). I am following Dave Akerman's guide, can anyone confirm the install process on this guide - is this for the receiving end? If so do I need to do anything on the...

Have a read of the installation instructions, which were updated 2-3 weeks ago to take into account changes to serial port handling in Raspbian.

As the Pi doesn't have analog input pins, I'd recommend using an i2c accelerometer instead.

Re: connecting sense hat

Yes, this just needs a stacking kit - a header with long pins, and a set of standoffs/bolts to fix it all together. The PITS board has a female GPIO connector, and is supplied with a normal short-pin header which is suitable for using the PITS on a Pi, but not suitable for adding a further board. Th...

Re: HAB Power - PITS and Pi

It would be a very stupid design if we didn't power the Pi from the same battery supply! Also, as I'm sure you've noticed, if you power the Pi from the Micro USB power socket then the PITS board powers up to. This is a clue that the two device share the power supply lines. Finally, if you read any o...

Re: Serial port missing - latest Jessie after update/upgrade

I have a solution; whether or not it's the "correct" solution I don't know but so far it's worked for me: 1 - Use raspi-config to enable serial port login/logging 2 - Disable getty on tthat port with: systemctl mask serial-getty@ttyAMA0.service I read elsewhere on the forum just now about adding "en...

Serial port missing - latest Jessie after update/upgrade

Pi B+. New SD with Jessie Lite dated May 10th. Disable serial port getty/logging via raspi-config. Reboot, and /dev/ttyAMA0 is there and works. Run sudo apt-get update and upgrade. Reboot. /dev/ttyAMA0 is now missing. No ttys0 either. As far as I can see, the serial port is gone completely. Ideas?

It should work, though I don't know of anyone who has used one. Online reviews are .. variable, and no doubt its performance is compromised by being so compact. I'd give it a miss.

If this is a Pi-In-The-Sky question, then the simplest is to enable gps logging, and open the gps.txt file when you recover the SD card.

Re: Which Model RPi for HAB

Just get a V2 B from wherever that's reliable, and test with that. Just avoid the V3 as the serial ports got swapped, and you'd need a workaround. You can use the Zero for flight but without a camera of course. I'd get a V2 B now and then see if stock situations improve before the flight (you could ...
