Your favorite console based applications...

A thread for new linux users and fans of console alike. X is great and all. But I love the utility and minimalism of a well written "graphical" (ncurses etc) console application. What are your favorites or most useful? I also feel like getting new users to "stay in console (or at least in a terminal...

Fun.

For those interested in the CLI-musicplayer topic, might also check out xmms2 , which is client/server model and has command line clients in the repository (plus tons of optional libraries). Also mp3blaster (supports ogg) is an old favorite of mine, console mode via ncurses.

Re: How to exit x?

For others reading, If ctrl-alt-backspace doesn't do it for you, you may have opted to exclude it in your keyboard configuration step, which you can redo using the raspi-config script or

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

Re: How to exit x?

What does the LXDE logout menu option actually do, because that seems to kill the RPi? I would have expected that to drop me back out to the command line. According to the parallel thread on this topic, that no workie and is to be avoided. that parallel thread is here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/ph...

I've exerienced this too, and even worse... kernel panics, but that was on older firmware... will have to try that setup again soon.

Re: lose ability to interact when closing X?

Thanks for the news/confirmations. Problem is. I wasn't trying to shutdown... I just wanted to leave X. Perhaps I'm expecting a "logout" behavior it wasn't gonna do anyway, but the crash was no bueno. Corrupted FS. Until I hear otherwise I think I'll be killing X remotely from another shell instead....

Re: lose ability to interact when closing X?

er maybe I won't. checkfs failed on following boot.

Amusing aside, when you are dropped to the maintenance shell... it's expecting a root password, which we don't have on the pi?

lose ability to interact when closing X?

Okay this is a weird one, and first I've encountered it. Latest firmware and wheezy just updated. When I close X Windows (with logout method) I arrive to a black screen, can't change to any other console. I can still ping the pi on the network. But attempting a ssh login, I get username and password...

same here on console. the permissions bug seems common between several distributions, not sure if the directfb issues are raspi specific, or wheezy specific, or other. I can tell it's running, memory wrote commands to exit work (Esc, f, x, y). I get a sense it's framebuffer resolution and virtual co...

Lynx is great! And really handy in some situations. Technically you could "browse the web" on a pi in a dumb terminal connected via serial console. In the rare event you have those options but no other functioning computer, or just for giggles.

Re: Best way to connect Pi to the internet

if your nearby computer is linux (which I believe it is not in this case?) and happens to have a spare wired-network connection, it's relatively easy to get "internet connection sharing" working with a cable between them (traditionally a "cross-over" style network cable). I mention it because it's h...

Woah really? I hadn't even caught that. Seems a really odd thing to leave out... I guess people would just use the one on their phone directly. Fortunately if you don't bury your Pi inside, we can still get to ours too.

I didn't gut it to see if battery swell was really the cause (because I intend to return it), could have just been damaged in shipping and didn't reveal so until I started handling it. It did act like it was charging anyway. But glad to know some folks got a good unit from them. Price was equivalent...
