Re: [Suggestion] Welcome to RaspberryPi Config

The options available in the setup wizard (and raspi-config) are restricted by the Debian locale database. In Debian, you do not set a country and a separate language, you select a "locale", which is a combination of a country and a language. (For example en_UK is English, UK.) Debian offers a hundr...

Re: Error messages from "dist-upgrade"

Just read the section Desktop configuration One of the other changes we’ve made this time is one that hopefully most people won’t notice! ... The key word here is "most". We have no way of anticipating every single change every Pi user has made to their configuration, and some people do odd ...

Re: Error messages from "dist-upgrade"

1) What's up with the stuff about a "Defaults page in Appearance Settings"? How/where is there a "page" in terms of configuring the desktop? If you look in the main menu under Preferences, there is an application called "Appearance Settings". If you launch it, you get a window with tabbed pages, on...

Re: Odd country, keyboard and language!

Is it possible to manually configure raspian with country = France, language = US English and keyboard layout = Swedish? Probably not. You can set whatever keyboard you like (in Mouse and Keyboard Settings), but country and language are set as one unit in Debian, called a "locale", and I don't thin...

Yes, it's in the "Raspbian with Desktop and Recommended Software" image, or can be added to the smaller "Raspbian with Desktop" image using the Recommended Software installer.

Re: Brand spanking new 2018-11-13-raspbian-stretch-full.img

I've just tried again - I wondered if it was something to do with the enabling of SSH or touching the file system before boot. On this occasion, I did everything you mention above (disabling overscan, enabling SSH), with the exception of setting the static IP addresses, and I still get no problem wi...

Re: Brand spanking new 2018-11-13-raspbian-stretch-full.img

OK, thank you for that - I've tried the process you mention in that order, and I do not see the panel file being overwritten by anything in the wizard; my taskbar stays resolutely where I put it. Nor can I think of anything the wizard is doing which ought to be overwriting the panel file - the packa...

/home/pi/.pp_backup/.config/lxpanel/LXDE-pi/panels/panel is just a backup file made by the Appearance Settings application - it is a copy of /home/pi/.config/lxpanel/LXDE-pi/panels/panel made when you start Appearance Settings and is copied back over it again when you leave Appearance Settings by pr...

Re: Brand spanking new 2018-11-13-raspbian-stretch-full.img

I've just checked this on a clean image, and I can't repeat the problem - when I move the taskbar, it stays at the bottom of the screen when I reboot. The setting is in the file ~/.config/lxpanel/LXDE-pi/panels/panel - there should be a line in the "Global" section at the start which says "edge=bott...

Simon Long needs a session with my well polished educational baseball bat. Dougie, comments like that are 100% unacceptable. If you want to get banned permanently, threats of violence against Pi staff, whether in jest or otherwise, are a really good way to go about it. An apology and a retraction a...

Re: Error updating raspberrypi-ui-mods (1.20180926)

The one thing I have done occasionally is to start pcmanfm as root. Could this cause the issue? Ah, yes - that might be enough to do it. One of the local config files which we removed so it didn't mask the global defaults was a pcmanfm config file, and if pcmanfm was run as root, it might have crea...

Re: Error updating raspberrypi-ui-mods (1.20180926)

One thing to mention to anyone who saw this bug. From what I can see, the bug will only manifest if you have at some point launched the desktop as the "root" user, by running startx with sudo, or logging into the CLI as root and then running startx. We really don't recommend running the desktop as r...

Re: Error updating raspberrypi-ui-mods (1.20180926)

We're pushing the fix to the repo now - give it an hour or so, and then do a sudo apt-get update / sudo apt-get dist-upgrade again. Apologies for the inconvenience - the only people affected by this should be those who have created an account for the root user with desktop config files, which hopefu...

Re: Error updating raspberrypi-ui-mods (1.20180926)

To help me debug this, can you please post the output of "getent passwd" on your Pi? (That doesn't reveal any passwords; just the names and shells used by any users you have set up.)

Many thanks.

It's a feature that only existed in that release and has now been removed, so don't worry about it! Re: GTK applications ignore font-weight on Raspbian?

In my experience, the support for font weights in GTK+ version 3 is fundamentally broken - in certain circumstances, GTK+ 3 only bothers using the font family and size, and ignores weight and style parameters, and it looks to me as if this is what you are hitting. I've raised this as a bug with GNOM...

If your menu is all in English and not half-English, half-German, then the locale is set to English.

Re: Suggestion: Languages, Keyboard layouts

For someone in your position, the new startup wizard will not do what you want, as you have already discovered. This is intentional - the aim of the wizard is to make setting up as easy as possible for the 95% of users who do not need a custom locale/keyboard setting. If I were to make it able to co...

Re: New version 2018-06-27 ... release notes ?

The startup wizard is fine for a first boot with persistance - and then never again, but it really shouldn't be running every live boot (without persistance) Unfortunately, it's non-trivial to prevent it running on a live image without persistence. I'd expect most people to be running either instal...

Release notes for the x86 version are the same as for the standard ARM version - just get them from the ARM version download page.
