It's 5V but we have found that the "3.3V" ESP8266's are fine. Probably not safe with a Pi without a voltage divider though.

I have been using the Peacefair Pzem-004T for the last year or so and have found them to be very reliable. So far I have only used them with ESP8266's but moving forward I might hook it up to a Pi. You say WiFi or IR but I assume you mean RF too? When you say no space in the conduit do you still have available gpio pins? @greatdane my EEPROM's arrived today and I'm happy to say that despite my DREADFUL soldering skills the first Status socket now survives through a power failure.

Pi to the Nano with a 20K resisitor worked fine. The Arduino folk also provided a link to a very detailed PDF (56 pages) by Microchip Technology Inc called 3V Tips 'n Tricks for interfacing between 3.3V and 5.0V devices. Looks to be from 2006 but I guess the laws of physics haven't changed that much...

For what it's worth I've just connected a Pi to a (5V) Pro Mini. The Pro Mini loop was reading a GPIO and if the GPIO was high it flashed its LED. It worked fine. For safety reasons it may be sensible to add a 20k current limiting resistor in between the Pi and Arduino. That will protect the Pi GPI...
