Re: Getting Started

I really like Roozbeh Hazrat's book, Mathematica: A Problem-Centered Approach. He works through small but interesting examples,to illustrate how to solve problems using Mathematica, like finding all perfect numbers up to 10,0000.

Re: Wolfram Alpha looks really fricken cool

The Wolfram language and Mathematica are extremely cool. I have them on all three of my RPis. They're now included as part of the Raspbian distribution. If you have Raspbian and would like to install it, instructions are here.

Re: Land your RasPI in a datacenter for free

I agree, they are really nice. My recollection is that they ran this offer once before, stopped it for new clients for a while, and then offered it again. I got in with the second wave.

Benchmarks

Matt Adereth has run some Mathematica benchmarks on the RPi: http://adereth.github.io/blog/2014/01/06/benchmarking-mathematica-on-the-raspberry-pi/ It's slow. As he says, though, it's also perfectly usable for a great many things despite that. My only complaint is I wish the notebook interface was s...

Re: what use is mathematica for raspi

One of the best things about Mathematica for learning, IMO (and I'm just learning it myself),is that there's such a low barrier to entry. Much like using BASIC, you can just try stuff and experiment. It's easy to start out using it as a simple calculator, then play around with its symbolic capabilit...

Re: what use is mathematica for raspi

A quick look around the Mathematica web site will reveal what an amazing tool it is. Go to http://demonstrations.wolfram.com/ and you'll find hundreds of code examples. I can't think of a better way to explore mathematics. I've been working through "Mathematica: A Problem-Centered Approach" , by Haz...

Re: Mathematica on Raspberry Pi

As a math and physics teacher, I think this is terrific. I'm currently teaching a course for future high school math teachers and I've already told them about this.

Re: Introduce yourself!

Hi! My name is Mark and I've recently purchased and started to play with a Raspberry Pi. I worked in the automotive industry for a number of years dealing with programming CAD systems and doing Unix systems administration. I'm now teaching math, physics, and astronomy online and also do photography,...
