It's not very expensive to shell a laptop dvd (I've done one ready for my pi)
And my shell came with a usb->power cord so i can just run it from the same hub my pi will run. Keeps wall plugs down to just 1 for the pi, a hdd and the drive
Looking online, both scart and hdmi have a 5v line you might be able to pull power off. The drive takes its power through the same usb? If your tv has 2+ usb, i'd suggest trying one of those usb cords with an extra plug purely for power.

You'd have to get a board that could drive the lcd as well as the lcd itself. These tend to be hard to come by and expensive for most screens. Then you'd have to work out how to interface the board with the Pi.

Confirmed in my thread on VGA that they are working on getting VGA onto the Mk.2 boards, and have found how to do it, they just need to do a lot of layout changes and thus can't get it done on the Mk.1's

Just as a sudden thought... could a pci port be added in any way? (via some of the expansion pins / headers?) That way, old graphics cards could be procured cheaply and used to give vga output.
