Re: Newbie can't get video to work

Using official camera module v2, Wheezy on PiNet. RP3 Python3 Here's the code I'm using: from picamera import PiCamera camera = PiCamera() camera. start_preview(alpha = 200) camera.start_recording('video.h264') time.sleep(10) camera.stop_recording() camera.stop_preview Hi Bob, Would I be right in t...

Re: Is pip currently broken in Debain/Raspbian Jessie?

Awesome. Thanks Dave. I've had issues with dependency installation before, but only in odd cases. I regularly install ipython with pip on a new Raspbian image and it's never been a problem until now. Like you say, must be a new dependency issue. Indeed - I've had a quick browse through the history ...

Re: Is pip currently broken in Debain/Raspbian Jessie?

I've been having issues with pip the last few days. I don't know what's causing it. [snip] However, using apt's version of pip (without upgrading) seems to break when installing modules with dependencies. Can anyone else reproduce this? Try: sudo pip install ipython Yup, this seems to be because De...

Re: Pure Python camera interface

Picamera 1.13 is now released! As usual, it'll be a few days until it hits the Raspbian repos but it's on PyPI now, and the docs should be updated in a mo. The major news this time around is a serious re-working of the lower level mmalobj API. I'm guessing most people haven't touched this so a quick...

Re: Python or C++ for fast recording?

Just to add a little to this topic: when it comes to simply recording data from the camera the choice of language will make little/no difference to the speed you can reach. All the serious processing happens on the GPU, which then sends packets of output to whatever you've got in userspace. So wheth...

Re: New 8MP Camera - Q&A thread

I have a question regarding the older V1 camera. Before I upgraded firmware and userspace stuff for the V2 camera, maximum FPS supported was 49FS at 1296x730 (mode 5), when setting a higher FPS, it would either revert back to 640x480 and scale-up or give an error message (don't remember). Now it se...

Re: New 8MP Camera - Q&A thread

One possible explanation is that you weren't using the "real" maximum resolution. Prior to picamera 1.11 being released, the MAX_RESOLUTION value was fixed at (2592, 1944), i.e. the max resolution of the V1 module. Hence even if you had a V2 module attached and set MAX_RESOLUTION you'd still just g...

Re: New 8MP Camera - Q&A thread

You need to drop the preview resolution - have a look at FAQ #15 Dave. I have already read this in FAQ and I have 2 questions; 1)The RPi cam. cannot operate real time in 5MP and above from start_preview? If this is true how can I saw this res. before and now I don't? One possible explanation is tha...

Re: New 8MP Camera - Q&A thread

As camera normally operates for some days, suddenly it starts something like "flickering" and emits black frames at 5MP and above resolutions; flicker.jpg I try to use as simpler script as I could but the camera still plays that way. Here is the script; import picamera import time camera = picamera...

Re: New 8MP Camera - Q&A thread

I've read all the previous posts and I can't find out how to take full res. from the camera in a python script. Sorry for this "silly" question but even when I try to set resolution further from 5MP (1920, 1080) I 've always an error. p.s. I found the CameraPi lib in python3 folder and as 6by9 said...

Re: Pure Python camera interface

Well, here's 1.12. A bit quicker than I'd expected but there was a rather important issue (297) that needed a quick release to fix. As you can probably guess there's nothing else really notable in this release (other than some other bug fixes and some rather esoteric functionality in the Color class...

Re: Pure Python camera interface

Well, it's been a while! Re: New 8MP Camera - Q&A thread

I got myself a V2 camera yesterday and did some preliminary testing. My project is using high speed video and I need the FOV of the old camera, with little no cropping. I have two options as I see it. 1. The 720P high FPS mode (120?) could possibly work for what I'm doing as it seem to have quite a...

Re: New 8MP Camera - Q&A thread

I have to resort to timestamping it in the callback, with some jitter ... most of the time just a few milliseconds. Is there a simple code fragment or example anywhere that shows how to get a timestamp for a video frame, with typically a few msec jitter? I'd be interested to see that. The buffer th...

Also please note that waveform80 has jumped the gun slightly with that list. The firmware update to give the full FOV 720p modes hasn't been pushed as yet. Well, I just realized that the code must be run from command window and not from Python IDLE window. At least that's how I got it to run. Thanks Dougie. I couldn't get it working with your suggestion (spacing issue possibly ? or brackets needed ?) but you did show me where to add things. I did get it working by adding camera.vflip = True I'm afraid it's actually "rotation" instead of "rotate". As to why "rotate" doesn't raise an erro...

Re: still capture rate (still FPS)

Okay, several things to go through here: A Pi 2 won't help much because the camera doesn't use the CPU - the firmware runs on the GPU, and that's exactly the same on the Pi 1 as the Pi 2. If you're overclocking stuff, the Pi 2 might be more tolerant, and obviously the extra speed doesn't hurt stuff ...

I'd add my 2 cents, but 6by9's pointed out everything I possibly could and a whole load besides. Okay, here's 1 cents worth: sure, the MMAL docs aren't perfect, but between them and the raspistill/raspivid source code I cobbled together the first version of picamera in a weekend. Preview positioning...
